The Mexican Grand Prix probably marked the definitive break between Antonio Giovinazzi and Alfa Romeo. A partnership that began three years ago with the support of Ferrari then led by Sergio Marchionne, but which now no longer seems to have a say in the choices of the team from Hinwil, despite the partnership with the Maranello team.
In Mexico City, Antonio Giovinazzi had started the race perfectly, finding himself in sixth place at the first corner and seventh after the restart caused by the accidents in the first lap, but the team called him back to the pits too soon destroying all his hopes of finishing in the points this weekend at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. Antonio then expressed all his disappointment in the post-race team radio message, publicly opening a wound that cannot be concealed in the eyes of the public.

Interviewed by Sky Sport, Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto tried to comment through a totally external point of view what happened in the Mexican Grand Prix – more generally – in Antonio Giovinazzi’s last troubled months in Formula 1.
“Very honestly I am unable to comment on this matter. I didn’t follow it because we were focused on our cars – said the team principal of the Maranello team – I don’t know what happened to Antonio. Having said that, in addition to being a deserving Italian driver, he is also a Ferrari driver. We too regret that he is somehow not put in the right conditions. We are sorry if he will not have a seat in Formula 1 next year. We believe that he has continuously grown and is doing well. I think he would be entitled to a seat next year, but this is not in our hands. It is not up to us to be able to make the choice.” – Mattia Binotto concluded.
