After weeks of speculation, Scuderia Ferrari has accepted the resignation of Mattia Binotto from the role of team principal and managing director of the Maranello team, as confirmed by Ferrari yesterday through an official statement.
The Italian engineer will remain in office until December 31st, then his future remains to be seen, but it is no mystery that Mattia Binotto is a figure that appeals to many manufacturers ready to get their hands on almost thirty years of experience within Ferrari.
As we reported ahead of getting the confirmation of his resignation, the period of inactivity – known as gardening leave – should be six months, even if today’s edition of the Italian daily newspaper Corriere dello Sport underlines that such an important figure as Mattia Binotto should not be allowed to work for the competition “in less than a year” .
The sports newspaper based in Rome believes that Mercedes and Alpine are certainly on the trail of the former Scuderia Ferrari team principal, defined as a “mat” who has with him a folder of infinite terabytes of know-how and procedures at Ferrari and beyond, also relating to delicate issue of the budget cap. “Toto Wolff will call him if he hasn’t already done so – read the columns of today’s edition – the two are on excellent terms and the Austrian manager has long wanted to step away from the role of team principal he has occupied since 2013 to remain full-time in the role of businessman. Certainly also interested is Luca De Meo, a.d. of the Renault group. They are united by the fact that they were both promoted (albeit with different times and methods) by Sergio Marchionne”.

The Il Resto Del Carlino newspaper and Il Corriere della Sera, on the other hand, converge on Audi’s strong interest in Mattia Binotto. The German side will make its debut in Formula 1 in 2026 and will supply the power units to the Swiss Sauber team, a very convenient prospect also at a logistical level for Mattia Binotto, who is born in Lausanne. “Binotto has received an offer from Audi”, writes Leo Turrini in the reference newspaper in Emilia Romagna, “Binotto on the other hand would have already been courted by other teams, there is talk of Audi which will enter Formula 1 in 2026. But not only” – the newspaper based in Milan wrote.
