Scuderia Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc shrugged off late-race throttle problems to hold off Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen and take his third win of the 2022 Formula 1 season at the Austrian Grand Prix earlier today, as an engine failure late in the race cost Carlos Sainz second place and Ferrari the chance to secure a great one-two finish, which would have reduced the gap to Red Bull in the world championship standings even more.
Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto comments and impressions after Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc won the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg:
“It was important for Charles to win. It has been a relief for him to win. He needed it. And he deserves it. We are all happy. I was as nervous as Charles had [pedal issues]. I stopped watching the race. But Charles is able to handle everything. He is a champion! I was a bit disappointed in Silverstone, and today too, but I’m happy for Charles and for us! Two wins in a row and here in Red Bull’s home! We can fight for wins and will keep on fighting. We just need to work on reliability…”
“I can’t wait for France! I’m confident.” – Charles Leclerc added – “Our car is performing so there’s no reason for it not to be perform there! The first overtake on Max was the most difficult. But it was cool and that’s the kind of battle you want to see more often! No answer for the pedal yet. It was really tricky. Thank god we crossed the chequered flag and we won. I needed it, we needed it after everything that happened.”
