Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto was recently interviewed by Luigi Perna from “La Gazzetta dello Sport”:
Did you expect your first year as Scuderia Ferrari’s Team Principal to be this challenging?
Mattia Binotto: “It has been very challenging on many aspects this year, technical, again as an engineer. To manage the drivers, the team, all the stuff where I had less experience, such as sponsors etc. It has also been a year during which we talked about the Concorde agreement (2021-2026), so on the political side there have been many things to manage. Only when you try it yourself, you can understand it completely.”
You said the new Ferrari will change a lot. What kind of Ferrari would you like to have under the Christmas tree for 2020?
Mattia Binotto: “It must be a fast and reliable Ferrari. A lot of downforce, a lot of power and efficiency on the straights. As we know, it’s never easy. In the last race in Abu Dhabi, others have been faster than us, so there is still a performance gap on which we have to work on. We are all focused in Maranello. We know what the challange is and we will take it.”

Why did you decide to change the Power Unit in a very important way, despite having the most powerful PU on the grid?
Mattia Binotto: “Because in Formula One you can never be satisfied. The moment you are satisfied with what you have, others are going to do a better job than you and surpass you. Therefore despite knowing that we had a very good Power Unit, maybe the best one, it was right to try something new, knowing that others will try to improve next year and we will have to do better.”
