During the Brazilian Grand Prix, there seemed to be problems for Ferrari, until the final stages of the race when the Maranello team’s two drivers made contact and had to retire. Many media outlets immediately criticized the Italian side for its line-up and added that having two top drivers would not work.
However, Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto sticks to his earlier clear statement about the current Ferrari line-up that is ideal for the team: “I am still convinced that having two of these drivers in my team is a luxury because they are both good drivers. Very good drivers.”
Charles Leclerc drove for Sauber (Alfa Romeo) last year and was promoted to Ferrari driver this season. This meant that two top drivers were seated next to each other, which should normally have a positive effect, but that has not yet been successful. Yet the Ferrari team boss thinks they are a good benchmark for each other: “They are both a good benchmark for the other and we have seen how they have improved. Seb was certainly very fast in the second half. So I think it’s generally still a luxury to have two such drivers on your team.” – he explained.

Conversation after the race was canceled
A Ferrari spokesperson confirmed that the regular joint press meeting of the drivers was canceled Sunday after the crash. Mattia Binotto, however, insists that they still have a “good relationship”.
He also rejected the suggestion that he should simply copy Toto Wolff’s approach to managing the drivers, once the Mercedes boss had drawn up a written list of guidelines for the competing Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, who could fight for the world title.
The team boss of the Scuderia is not interested in that leadership way. “I don’t know what Toto did, I don’t want to judge that and I’m not interested,” – Mattia Binotto added.
