Mattia Binotto confirms Ferrari wanted a strong power unit for 2022 as “reliability will come”. Mattia Binotto on Ferrari's power unit.

In the last nine races of the 2022 Formula 1 season, Scuderia Ferrari has had a DNF in five of them, with a double retirement at the Baku City Circuit in Azerbaijan. Reliability has therefore proved to be the Maranello team’s major issue in this first part of the championship, a key aspect that has hampered Ferrari’s efforts to challenge Red Bull for the Formula 1 titles.

The performance is there, reliability will come
“It is true that the engine is giving us reliability problems, but the power unit will be frozen for the next few seasons except for reliability, for which it is still allowed to intervene, so it was important for us to build an engine that was performing as good as possible.” – said Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto after the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday. – “We pushed a lot on this front this winter and the engineers have done an extraordinary job. I don’t feel I can blame them. We will fix the problems, we will know how to do it. Unfortunately, speaking of the engine, we cannot think of solving everything overnight. There are no solutions that can be taken in ten days. There are parts to modify, to produce, to validate and homologate, but we will get there. The basis is also good for next season and this is important. Will there be a penalty for Carlos Sainz in France? I haven’t done the math yet, it’s still early to say”. – the Ferrari boss added.

The strong point: tire management
Finally, a comment on what was Ferrari’s strong point in Austria, namely tire management: “As a team, at the level of engineers, drivers, strategists, radio communications, I have liked tire management a lot this year. Seeing the progress, I think both drivers have been very good, Charles Leclerc has also progressed a lot in this respect also through the engineering support. I don’t feel it as a weakness. The car is well balanced and can be kind to the tires. Sometimes more or less well. In Miami and Imola we had more difficulties than our rivals. This year the cars are so close that every detail can swing the values by a tenth to our advantage or disadvantage. The difference is subtle. So we have to continue to work in order to ensure that it is always to our advantage” – Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto concluded.
