Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto believes that a championship title “will come” for the Maranello team in the future. Ferrari last won a World title in 2007 with Kimi Raikkonen beating the McLaren pairing of Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso by a single point.
A year later the Scuderia won the Constructors’ crown, and that’s the last of the big silverware. Although the team has been runner up in both championships several times since, they have failed to get across the line. Adding to their misery, Ferrari’s form took a nosedive last season with the team falling to sixth in the championship having not won a single grand prix.
The great news is, Mattia Binotto is convinced the drought will end one day. But when, he can’t say.
“I am proud to be at the head of a group of extraordinary people,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport. “I believe in work as a tool for achieving goals. The World Championship will come because, thanks to the work of each of us and the support we receive, we will be able to become the best team of all. When I don’t know, but I’m sure it will come.” – he added.
It won’t be this season with the team boss saying that while Ferrari have produced a better car, they have been hamstrung by last year’s decision to race the 2020 cars in this year’s championship. The teams were all given just two development tokens to improve their cars.
“We are aware that we have not closed the gap with the best, also because the car has remained largely frozen. Still, I have heard rumours that we should still make proclamations of victory, just because we are Ferrari. I think it is not honest. But for our part, we will show that the progress is real and that we have the ability to return to fighting for the positions that compete with us. I feel able to promise this.” – he explained.
For this year, Mattia Binotto concedes, the battle will be between Mercedes and Red Bull for the World titles.
“I think the fight between Mercedes and Red Bull will be much closer than last year. Despite the fact that Milton Keynes’s team has not been competitive for the championship for seven years, they have been able to resist while maintaining enviable stability.” – Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto concluded.
This season Ferrari has a new driver with Carlos Sainz joining the team as Charles Leclerc’s team-mate.
