After the reports from the Italian media at the beginning of the week about his possible departure from Scuderia Ferrari after the 2022 Formula 1 season and his replacement with Frederic Vasseur, an explanation was expected from Mattia Binotto in Abu Dhabi. The Italian manager, after missing the race in Brazil, is back with the team, but kept a low profile in the early days at Yas Marina, avoiding giving interviews to journalists.
Mattia Binotto’s presence in the traditional press conference dedicated to team principals on Saturday was an opportunity to address the highly debated topic, despite the denial that came from Maranello via Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.
Mattia Binotto, once the question came from the media, joked with journalists: “I didn’t expect this question”, before going into the details of the matter: “There is always a great passion that surrounds Ferrari. But also rumours and speculations. After what was written, I spoke with President John Elkann. We had open discussions and decided that the best way to silence these rumors would be to issue a statement. The rumors are false, without foundation“, assured the Prancing Horse team principal, before adding: “In any case, I don’t want the team to be distracted by these things“.
Mattia Binotto was asked if he can categorically say that he will be team principal next year: “Obviously it‘s not down to me to decide but I am pretty relaxed.”
