Martin Brundle believes Mercedes cannot consider the 2026 Formula 1 championship secure, despite winning eight of the opening 11 races and establishing a commanding position during the first half of the season. Recent progress from Ferrari and McLaren has altered the competitive picture, while uncertainty surrounding the remaining calendar could add another unpredictable element to the title battle.
Kimi Antonelli enters the summer break as the championship leader, holding a 50-point advantage over Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton. However, Brundle has warned that Mercedes’ early dominance does not guarantee that the Italian driver will retain control throughout the second half of the campaign.
Martin Brundle sees the 2026 F1 title fight tightening
Mercedes set the benchmark during the opening phase of the new regulatory era, with the Brackley team winning eight Grands Prix before the August break. Antonelli emerged as its leading title contender, while George Russell also contributed to a commanding start for the W17.
Ferrari nevertheless remains within striking distance in both championships. The Maranello team has gradually reduced the performance gap in recent rounds, although Frédéric Vasseur acknowledged in his Ferrari mid-season assessment that its progress must now be converted into stronger results and fewer missed opportunities.
Speaking on Sky Sports F1, Martin Brundle indicated that the championship remained far from settled. He argued that the leading group was becoming more competitive and suggested that McLaren could become an increasingly serious factor if its latest development step proved effective at a wider range of circuits.
McLaren upgrade gives Lando Norris fresh momentum
McLaren provided the clearest evidence of the changing competitive order at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Lando Norris delivered a strong weekend in Budapest after the Woking team introduced a substantial package of updates for the MCL40.
The upgrades helped Norris challenge at the front and reignited a championship contest that had previously appeared to be moving firmly in Mercedes’ direction. Brundle believes McLaren could remain competitive at Zandvoort if the improvement seen in Hungary transfers successfully to a circuit with different characteristics.
Ferrari must therefore pursue Mercedes while also responding to a strengthening McLaren. The Scuderia has chosen to maintain its own race-by-race SF-26 development strategy, introducing components when they are ready rather than waiting to assemble every improvement into a larger package.
That technical race could become decisive during the second half of the year. Mercedes still possesses the championship advantage, but improvements from two rival teams mean Antonelli and the W17 may no longer enjoy the same margin over the rest of the leading group.
Calendar uncertainty adds another variable to championship battle
The competitive situation is not the only factor shaping the 2026 title outlook. Geopolitical concerns in the Middle East have already led to the cancellation of the Bahrain Grand Prix, with Formula 1 reinstating Malaysia’s Sepang circuit as a replacement venue. The championship last visited Sepang in 2017.
The status of further Middle Eastern rounds also remains uncertain. Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali has indicated that the season could conclude in Europe if the affected events cannot proceed, creating the possibility of an unusual late-November or early-December finale.
Brundle calculated that 291 points remained available if the rest of the planned season took place. He praised Formula 1 and its partners for responding creatively to the disruption, comparing their flexibility with the approach used to rebuild calendars during the pandemic.
The former Formula 1 driver also acknowledged the practical difficulties of staging a European replacement event so late in the year. In a light-hearted assessment, he suggested that floodlights and windscreen wipers might be required, while maintaining that the teams and drivers would adapt calmly to the conditions.
Mercedes still leads but Ferrari retains a route back
Antonelli remains the clear championship favourite after an exceptional opening half of the season. His 50-point advantage over Hamilton gives Mercedes valuable protection, but it is not yet large enough to remove the threat of a significant swing caused by upgrades, reliability problems or changing competitive form.
The latest 2026 Formula 1 drivers’ standings underline the scale of Ferrari’s challenge, yet Brundle’s warning reflects how quickly the championship picture has evolved. McLaren has returned to winning contention, the SF-26 has become more competitive and the remaining calendar may differ considerably from the original plan.
Mercedes therefore begins the second half from a position of strength rather than complete security. If Ferrari and McLaren continue closing the performance gap, the fight involving Antonelli, Hamilton and the other leading drivers could remain open deep into the final stages of the season.
