Earlier this week, Charles Leclerc and Ferrari officially confirmed a new multi-year contract extension, ending months of speculation surrounding the future of one of Formula 1’s most highly regarded drivers. While the announcement reinforced the long-term commitment between the Monegasque and the Scuderia, former Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle believes the decision was only made after a careful evaluation of all available alternatives.
Charles Leclerc is now in his eighth season with Ferrari, a partnership that has delivered memorable victories, pole positions and a championship challenge in 2022. However, despite flashes of brilliance, the ultimate objective of returning Ferrari to the top of Formula 1 has so far remained out of reach.
Over the years, the 28-year-old has repeatedly stated that his dream is to become Formula 1 World Champion with Ferrari. Yet according to Brundle, such an important career decision was never going to be made without first examining the opportunities available elsewhere on the grid.
Frederic Vasseur’s influence remains crucial
One of the key themes that emerged following the announcement of Charles Leclerc’s contract extension was the significant role played by Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur. The Frenchman has frequently been mentioned by the Ferrari driver as a major factor in his decision to continue with the team.
Speaking to Sky F1, Martin Brundle admitted he found that detail particularly revealing.
“It is very interesting because he keeps mentioning Fred Vasseur,” Martin Brundle explained. “It almost feels as though he wants to publicly reinforce his support for him. The two have a very strong relationship, just as Lewis Hamilton does. Both of them worked with Vasseur in the junior categories and that helped create a special bond.”
The connection between Charles Leclerc and Frederic Vasseur stretches back many years, long before the Monegasque reached Formula 1. That long-standing relationship is widely considered one of the foundations of the trust that now exists between driver and team principal.
A Ferrari love story, but not without exploring alternatives
While Charles Leclerc’s loyalty to Ferrari has never been seriously questioned, Brundle emphasized that drivers of his calibre have a responsibility to understand the full market before committing their future.
“It is a long love story with Ferrari, but it is normal for a driver of that level to evaluate all the available options before signing a new contract,” Martin Brundle said. “That is simply part of the job when you are one of the leading figures in Formula 1.”
The former Grand Prix driver also reflected on the results achieved by Charles Leclerc since joining Ferrari. Although the partnership has produced several highlights, Martin Brundle pointed out that the overall success has not matched the expectations many had when the Monegasque was identified as Ferrari’s future leader.
“Eight years have passed and, if you look at the numbers, it has not been a journey full of success,” he observed. “He has not won since the middle of 2024, but he remains one of the best drivers on the grid and this weekend he could return to the top step of the podium. It is a positive situation both for him and for Ferrari.”
Mercedes and McLaren reportedly among the options
Although Charles Leclerc ultimately chose to continue his career in red, he has acknowledged that he considered other opportunities before finalizing the extension.
When asked which teams may have shown interest in securing the services of the Ferrari star, Martin Brundle offered a straightforward answer: “Obviously, he will have spoken at least with McLaren and Mercedes,” Brundle stated.
The comment adds another layer to the story behind one of the most significant contract renewals in Formula 1. Both Mercedes and McLaren are currently among the strongest teams on the grid and would naturally be attractive destinations for a driver of Charles Leclerc’s calibre.
In the end, however, the Monegasque chose continuity over change. Despite the interest that may have existed elsewhere, Charles Leclerc’s faith in Ferrari, combined with his trust in Frederic Vasseur and the long-term project in Maranello, proved strong enough to convince him to remain committed to the team where he hopes to achieve his ultimate ambition: becoming Formula 1 World Champion in red.
