British former racing driver and current Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle has praised Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc for improving his performance in this start of the 2022 Formula 1 season:
“Charles Leclerc has stepped up to a higher plane, delivering speed with consistency and seemingly always a half a step ahead of this car, rather than close to the edge of the car’s limit and the occasional heavy shunt as we’ve seen in the past,” the former F1 driver wrote in his column for Sky Sports F1, at the end of the 2022 Australian Grand Prix, which Charles Leclerc won in a dominant manner, finishing 20 seconds ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ George Russell (+25.593) – “The new regulations suit him and he’s developed confidence and increased self-belief. Two pole positions, two wins, a second, and three fastest laps in three races rather confirms that.” – Sky Sports pundit Martin Brundle added.
At the same time, Martin Brundle has warned Carlos Sainz that he may now have to play a supporting role to his Maranello teammate after their contrasting weekends at the Albert Park Circuit in the Australian Grand Prix. The Spanish driver had to start the Melbourne event from ninth place after not being able to set more than one fast lap in qualifying due to a red flag as a result of Fernando Alonso’s crash. The Spaniard suffered further bad luck on Sunday, when he experienced issues with his steering wheel on the grid and struggled to get his Hard tyres working in the first laps of the Austran Grand Prix. After losing several positions, he tried to make up ground as fast as possible and spun off the circuit going into Turn 10. This was the end of the race for Carlos, as his car remained beached in the gravel.
“Carlos Sainz had the weekend from hell, missing out on a solid qualifying lap when his friend Fernando Alonso caused a red flag by crashing due to technical issues, and then with further engine starting dramas not delivering a representative lap. Out of true position in ninth on the grid, he needed a last-minute steering wheel change which led to an awful start, and he then proceeded to have a brutal midfield fight on Hard compound tyres, eventually impatiently spinning off the road. He may well end up having to play a supporting role to Leclerc from here, depending on how the competition shapes up and if he can win the next couple of races, which is not out of the question.” – Martin Brundle concluded.
