During the grid walk preceding the Canadian Grand Prix, Sky Sport F1 commentator Martin Brundle managed to raise some eyebrows among the Scuderia Ferrari engineers when he squatted down to inspect the underside of Charles Leclerc’s SF-23 single-seater, just minutes before the start of the Montreal race.
As celebrities were absent from the grid, Martin Brundle promised viewers a more nostalgic and traditional segment, which led him to stumble upon the SF-23 car raised up in the air. The Maranello team was addressing an issue with the car’s floor, working hastily to fix it. In an attempt to shield their floor design from prying eyes, the engineers had formed a protective circle around the car. However, undeterred, the intrepid Martin Brundle decided to take a sneak peek by getting down on his hands and knees and looking through their legs.
“We can catch a glimpse here as they remove a section of the car’s underfloor,” he informed the viewers while the cameraman also dropped to ground level. Unfortunately, their actions were soon noticed by a vigilant member of the Maranello staff, who promptly instructed them to cease their observations.
Martin Brundle complied with the request but didn’t appear particularly pleased about it. “I’m not sure why… there’s nothing for us to learn from that,” he remarked, rising to his feet and heading straight for team boss Fred Vasseur. When asked about the issue with Charles Leclerc’s SF-23 car, the Frenchman’s response was: “We damaged the plank on a kerb and we are changing it. We got the approval from the FIA. I don’t know [how he did it] yet because Charles was at the top of the grid and we haven’t discussed it.” And, asked how he feels his drivers will get on, Vasseur was cautious about making any bold predictions. As you know, there are two kinds of races. The first is a clean one where you can overtake, and the other is you have a DRS train and you get stuck in the traffic. But we can expect to come back.”
