Marc Gené has been with Ferrari for many years, considering that the first contract signed in Maranello dates back to 2004. The winner of the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours has worked for many years alongside the racing drivers, and according to his experience the Carlos Sainz’s period of adaptation should have been longer. Instead Carlos surprised him positively in this start of the 2021 Formula 1 season.
“The battle with Charles Leclerc has already begun, it’s a surprise. I never imagined that at Imola Carlos would be one second behind in the race and that he would be ahead in qualifying at Portimao. Also because we know how strong Charles is on the flying lap. Carlos still has margin, I knew he was strong but not like that. He and Norris are in the top five, at the level of Hamilton, Verstappen and Leclerc. I think that between the two Charles will arrive in front this year, but in any case what matters is Ferrari “, explained Gené, now a commentator on Sky Sport, for the Gazzetta dello Sport.
Carlos Sainz is however returning from a negative result in Portugal, where he finished outside the points: “In hindsight, you would do all the races differently. The undercut on Norris didn’t work and it’s a pity for the good qualifying. But Carlos is not emotional, he doesn’t get so angry. He has a constructive attitude, thinks about what he can learn from each situation. He has the right approach you need in racing, and in life. Don’t forgert that he only had a day and a half of pre-season testing to get used to the new car, which is something we need to discuss. So he can’t afford who knows what. With every GP he grows, he’s a super smart guy“, Reiterated Gené. With these words the former Minardi and Williams driver confirmed what was also claimed by Zak Brown, who has always praised Carlos Sainz for being a real team player for McLaren.
