Official work has begun on asphalt for “La Monumental,” the most important corner of the future F1 circuit in Madrid, known as the Madring. Located in the Valdebebas area, this stretch will host the Spanish Grand Prix next September.
From the early morning hours, three asphalt-laying machines began applying the first layer of the road surface. While paving work had already started on other sections of the track in previous days, this intervention marks a decisive step in the corner considered key to the layout.
Technical characteristics of La Monumental
La Monumental is approximately half a kilometer long, featuring a 24% gradient, making it one of the steepest and most spectacular curves in the project. This high banking demands extreme precision and skill from the drivers, putting their abilities to the test.
The paving is carried out in three distinct layers:
- First layer: base bitumen.
- Second layer: intermediate.
- Third layer: the final “surface” that the F1 cars will race on.

Precision is critical: any imperfections in the base could damage the cars and raise objections from the FIA. The extreme incline makes the process particularly delicate and requires meticulous attention to detail.
The corner’s importance for the circuit
La Monumental is defined as the key and most emblematic corner of the entire Madring circuit. It is designed to become one of the most spectacular and distinctive features of the urban layout, helping make Madrid one of the most challenging and attractive tracks on the F1 calendar. Alongside the paving of La Monumental, work continues uninterrupted on the pit building, the facility from which the cars will enter and exit the track.
Construction activities are managed so as not to interfere with the regular operations of IFEMA, the adjacent exhibition complex, ensuring daily activities in the area continue without disruption.
Visual appearance and design proposals
Unlike traditional circuits with black asphalt, a proposal has been made to use red in tribute to the colors of the Comunidad de Madrid. The track edges will be decorated with the colors of the Spanish flag, giving the circuit a strong, recognizable identity.
With the start of the paving of La Monumental, the circuit is taking increasingly clear shape, moving closer to its goal of becoming a landmark urban track in the Formula 1 World Championship.
