Following the United States Grand Prix, which was held on Sunday at the Circuit of the Americas, former Ferrari engineer Luigi Mazzola analyzed the key events of the Austin weekend, focusing particularly on the progress shown by Mercedes and the disastrous strategy of Scuderia Ferrari for Charles Leclerc’s race.
United States GP, Luigi Mazzola’s Analysis
As we reported, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc were disqualified by the FIA because their respective cars did not comply with Article 3.5.9 e) of the technical regulations (related to the plank, the central area of the underbody). However, the British driver put on a remarkable performance, finishing second despite the strategy that cost him the victory. “I want to start this post by highlighting Lewis Hamilton’s great performance. The strategy took away his win, but at the same time, Mercedes, with the new developments, gave him a very fast car,” Luigi Mazzola wrote on Facebook at the end of the United States Grand Prix.
The engineer from Emilia-Romagna then focused on the decisions made by the Maranello pit wall in terms of race strategies: “Ferrari managed to lose a likely podium with an absurd strategy, and Charles Leclerc, who started from first place, found himself in P6. Poor Charles, the team is demoralizing him more and more.” It’s worth noting that after the disqualifications of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari still secured a podium thanks to Carlos Sainz, who finished in P3 behind Max Verstappen and Lando Norris: “Max fought hard with a car that wasn’t performing as usual, but in the end, he won again. Hats off to him. Great job by Lando, who managed to secure a podium.” – the Italian pointed out.
Finally, Luigi Mazzola concluded his analysis with the following observation: “It’s embarrassing to see that two teams with four drivers started from the pit lane because, with only an hour of free practice, they couldn’t balance the car, having brought significant developments for this race. The parc fermé rule remains an incomprehensible one.”
