Through his social media channels, former Ferrari race engineer Luigi Mazzola has analyzed the main events of the 2023 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, focusing particularly on Scuderia Ferrari, which finished in third (Carlos Sainz) and fourth (Charles Leclerc) positions. The Italian engineer believes that the podium achieved by the Maranello team at Monza is the result of excellent preparation for the weekend, but he anticipates that the upcoming races will be more challenging. Below are his insights.
Luigi Mazzola: “Ferrari prepared very well for Monza”
“Unfortunately, in the race, the Red Bulls showed once again at Monza that they are too strong,” Luigi Mazzola begins, commenting on the Monza Grand Prix, won by Max Verstappen for Red Bull – his tenth consecutive victory – ahead of his teammate Sergio Perez.
Then the engineer focuses on Ferrari’s race: “Carlos Sainz defended well, but it was impossible to keep both Max and Perez behind. A beautiful battle between the two Ferrari drivers, perhaps a bit on the edge, but at least it kept the emotional level high. Given the season, let’s be content with a podium at Monza. I believe Charles Leclerc may be quite disappointed and upset.” Regarding the rest of the grid: “They were too far behind; Mercedes, Aston Martin, and McLaren were out of the picture.”
Returning to the topic of the Maranello team, Luigi Mazzola continues his analysis by pointing out that: “They prepared very well for Monza, and it is confirmed that with the low-downforce aerodynamic configuration, they become the second force in the championship.” However, the Italian technician tempers the enthusiasm with a rather pessimistic forecast: “I believe the upcoming races will be a bit more challenging.” – he concluded.
