The 2024 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix proved to be a challenging event for Scuderia Ferrari. Despite the efforts of Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz, and the Maranello team, their varied tyre strategies were not sufficient to improve their grid positions, resulting in fifth and sixth-place finishes. The team departs Barcelona with an additional 18 points, maintaining their second place in the Constructors’ Championship. However, they recognize the need to enhance their qualifying performance to secure better starting positions. With the front-runners so closely matched, overtaking and gaining positions on race day remains a significant challenge.
During the second lap of the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz seized an opportunity to overtake teammate Charles Leclerc on the outside of Turn 1. The aggressive maneuver resulted in Leclerc’s front wing clipping Sainz’s right rear wheel, causing damage to Leclerc’s car while Sainz successfully maintained his position on the track.
Luigi Mazzola, former Head Coordinator of Performance at Ferrari, commented on the misunderstanding within the Italian side, specifically between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, during the Spanish Grand Prix on the Race Anatomy show.
Luigi Mazzola’s analysis
Here is the comment from the former engineer on the matter: “Regarding the statements, there’s nothing to say, each one speaks from their own point of view, so they are understandable.” – the Italian pointed out at the end of the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona – “Carlos Sainz can only benefit in his future career by being intelligent, a wise person. This is what he should do, in my opinion: try to figure out how to run his race without damaging the team.”
“Fred Vasseur, from his position as team principal, I don’t think he can do much about what happens on the track. In preparing for the race and during briefings, he should emphasize the wisdom of the drivers, to try not to disturb each other,” Luigi Mazzola concluded.
