Montezemolo says yes to Verstappen in Ferrari and regrets the Leclerc-Sainz duo
Luca Cordero di Montezemolo has no doubts: he would say yes to bringing Max Verstappen to Ferrari in place of Lewis Hamilton. Speaking at the premiere of the documentary about his life, Luca: Seeing Red, held at The Whiteley, the former Ferrari president made it clear who he believes is the best driver currently in Formula 1.
The Dutch Red Bull driver, despite an inconsistent season, continues to prove that even with a less competitive car, he can still reach the top step of the podium. His recent victories in Monza and Baku have once again underlined his exceptional talent and determination.
There are 63 points separating him from championship leader Oscar Piastri. Yet, many in the F1 paddock believe that Max Verstappen could still be capable of winning the world title this year. “Today, for me, Verstappen is number one,” said Luca di Montezemolo during the event.
“Because Verstappen, even in the last race, in difficult situations, never loses control. He was always fast. He never makes mistakes. He was fantastic even in karting. When he was 13 years old, he was already incredibly strong,” he explained, recalling Verstappen’s remarkable consistency and focus.
At the moment, however, the possibility of seeing the four-time world champion in Maranello seems unlikely. Max Verstappen has publicly stated his intention to continue his career with Red Bull — at least for now.
Luca di Montezemolo also had kind words for Ferrari’s former driver pairing. “The Sainz-Leclerc duo was really good. There’s no doubt about it. But, without question, Verstappen is by far the best from my point of view,” he said.
Finally, when asked what he would do if he were called back to lead Ferrari, Luca di Montezemolo smiled and said: “If I were obliged to return to work there and had a week to decide who to put in different positions, without a doubt Verstappen would be the first name on that list.”
