A few days ago, Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto, announced that Mick Schumacher will be one of the two third drivers of the Prancing Horse in the 2022 Formula One season, taking over from Antonio Giovinazzi when the Italian will not be available due to his commitments with the Dragon-Penske team in Formula E. This role will obviously go alongside that of main driver for Haas, with which the young German talent made his debut season in Formula 1 this year for the 2020 Formula 2 champion. A great friend of his father Michael at the time of the Ferrari adventure, former test driver Luca Badoer, wanted to show his support for the Ferrari junior.
Interviewed by the Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian – who played a crucial role in the development of the cars which were brought to success by the Kaiser – hopes one day to see Mick retrace Michael’s footsteps in the Maranello team: “Seeing him in the role of third driver is good news – said the 50-year-old from Montebelluna – we hope it represents another step towards the goal which is to see a Schumacher at the wheel of the red car. We all know what the name Schumacher meant for Ferrari. His season? It becomes difficult to evaluate a driver when he races with an uncompetitive car. In general I think it is positive, without forgetting that in the minor formulas he had done really well” – Luca Badoer underlined.
Regarding Scuderia Ferrari’s 2021 season, on the other hand, Luca Badoer’s opinion is not as good. However, the hope is that in 2022, with the new technical regulation, the results of the long improvement process carried out by team principal Mattia Binotto will finally be seen. “One cannot be happy. If your name is Ferrari you have to fight to win races and titles. But they worked well for next season – the Italian acknowledged – and when there are regulatory changes there are always surprises: well, I hope Ferrari will be one of the positive surprises” – he concluded.
