After having formalized his departure from Ferrari as team principal and technical director, Mattia Binotto has been approached by various important teams, above all Mercedes and Audi. The Italian technician brings with him all the secrets about the Ferrari project as well as an enormous knowledge of hybrid engines and technical regulations.
This idea would appeal to many teams but not only. According to what was reported by RMC Motori, in fact, Mattia Binotto would be evaluating the possibility of working for Liberty Media, alongside his friend Stefano Domenicali in the role left vacant by the retiring Ross Brawn.
As reported by Paolo Ciccarone, “the hypothesis is being examined by the parties and some details are still being defined. Last but not least, the discussion revolves around the “gardening” period that Mattia Binotto should respect after leaving Ferrari, which could be reduced to six months” and would not allow him to work for a rival team. If this rumor is confirmed, the Italian-Swiss technician would join Liberty Media in the role of technical supervisor. Furthermore, by not taking on any role in any other team on the grid, Mattia Binotto could bypass the imposed “gardening” period and start working together with Stefano Domenicali as early as January.
The Italian technician, despite having resigned on November 29th, will continue to work on the 675 project for the 2023 Formula One season until December 31st. Again according to Paolo Ciccarone, Mattia Binotto would also have negotiated a further severance pay of 1.5 million euros, although this news has not yet been confirmed.

From a purely technical point of view, the image of Mattia Binotto would be perfect to replace the loss of Ross Brawn deciding to retire. The former Ferrari team principal can boast a perfect knowledge of hybrid engines, as well as having carried out a study on behalf of the FIA on the impact of biofuels to reach net zero.
The Liberty Media option for Mattia Binotto can still be taken with a grain of salt, but everything suggests a mutual benefit between the two parties should it be decided to proceed officially.
