United States – Miami is not the only United States city on Formula One owner Liberty Media’s radar for the future of the sport. It has recently emerged that authorities are close to giving the green-light for a Miami street race for 2019, but in addition to Austin, it would be the second Grand Prix in the US.
And now it has been confirmed that there may be other American races on the cards for the next Formula One sasons, as Irish-American executive Chase Carey, who is the chief executive officer and executive chairman of the Formula One Group, recently told German commercial television network RTL: “We have made it clear from day one that our goal is to continue to develop the sport in the US. We have talked about ‘destination cities’ like Miami, New York and Las Vegas,” he added.
The first time we heard about a Formula One Grand Prix in the New York area was in 2011, when the Port Imperial Street Circuit was announced as a part of the provisional 2013 season calendar. This track was planned to run through Weehawken and West New York, New Jersey. The location was chosen for several reasons, including its superb view of the New York City skyline and Hudson River, elevation changes, and proximity to public transportation. In 2012, Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel ran a promotional demo on the track’s planned route, which he called “exceptional,” and likened it to classic Grand Prix circuits Spa-Francorchamps and Monaco.
