Lewis Hamilton Taken Aback by Warm Reception from Ferrari Fans Despite Missing Imola Podium
Lewis Hamilton experienced his inaugural Formula 1 race in Italy as a Ferrari driver at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, marking a major milestone after 17 seasons of racing in front of Ferrari’s loyal Tifosi as a rival. The passionate red sea of fans at Imola welcomed the seven-time world champion with open arms, delivering a surprising and emotional response—despite a weekend that didn’t meet Ferrari’s usual high expectations.
As Ferrari faces the potential loss of one of its two home races—Imola could be dropped from the calendar next year—the team’s efforts at what might be the final Emilia Romagna Grand Prix were far from ideal. Both Hamilton and Charles Leclerc underperformed in qualifying, failing to secure top-10 grid spots, a fact highlighted by 1996 world champion Damon Hill, who openly criticized the Scuderia’s struggles in Saturday’s session.
However, both drivers recovered well during Sunday’s race. Hamilton, in particular, delivered an impressive drive. His bold move around the outside in the first corner mirrored the race-winning overtake Max Verstappen executed on Oscar Piastri. Still, the Brit ran out of time to catch the McLaren driver and claim the final podium position.
Despite the disappointment, the Ferrari faithful showed unwavering support. Their reaction following the race was what truly stood out, catching even seasoned motorsport observers off guard. Italian journalist Roberto Chinchero, speaking on the James Allen on F1 Podcast, revealed he was struck by the unexpected warmth directed toward Hamilton by Ferrari fans.
Roberto Chinchero explained that many former Ferrari drivers have emphasized how meaningful the first race in Italy is when representing the Maranello team. For Hamilton, this tradition appeared to hold true. Chinchero noted that while the 2025 Formula 1 season had so far fallen short of expectations, this had not dampened the Tifosi’s enthusiasm. Despite no reason for celebration at Imola, there was a moment post-race that left a lasting impression: The Briton stepped out from the garage to acknowledge the fans from the pit wall, and was met not with jeers or silence, but with cheers and encouragement. According to the Italian journalist, the message was clear—better results are expected in the future, but the fans are already behind him.
While a podium finish in front of the Tifosi remains out of reach for now, Hamilton’s welcome suggests that hope and support remain firmly in place.
Looking ahead, there is reason for Lewis Hamilton and his teammate Leclerc to feel optimistic about their next home race at Monza. The Italian Grand Prix traditionally serves as Ferrari’s emotional epicenter, and if recent developments bear fruit, the team might offer their fans a more competitive outing.
Journalist Ben Hunt also noted the diverse fan presence at the 4.909-kilometre Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, remarking on the significant turnout of Argentine supporters for Alpine’s rookie driver Franco Colapinto. While Colapinto’s five-race deal leaves his participation at Monza uncertain, the growing enthusiasm around emerging talents only adds to the energy Ferrari could tap into on home soil later in the season.
Meanwhile, Ferrari’s engineers and technicians are actively pursuing upgrades to close the gap to Red Bull and McLaren. A redesigned rear suspension is currently in development, though its debut date remains uncertain. Encouragingly, the team appears to have a firm grasp on the SF-25’s weaknesses, a sign that solutions—if properly resourced—could arrive in time to make an impact.
For now, the Maranello team’s loyal fanbase has embraced Hamilton as one of their own. That emotional backing could prove crucial as the Scuderia pushes for stronger performances in the heart of its homeland.
