Nico Rosberg has named Lewis Hamilton the greatest Formula 1 driver of all time, placing his former Mercedes teammate ahead of Michael Schumacher after witnessing the Briton’s resurgence with Ferrari. Coming from the man who shared a garage with both champions – and who defeated Lewis Hamilton to win the 2016 World Championship – the verdict carries more weight than most opinions in Formula 1’s endless GOAT debate.
Some public endorsements mean more because of the person making them. Nico Rosberg is far from a neutral observer. He experienced Lewis Hamilton’s ability at close quarters, spent years alongside him at Mercedes and ultimately became the driver who interrupted his teammate’s dominance by claiming the only World Championship of his career in 2016.
Nico Rosberg names Lewis Hamilton the greatest F1 driver ever
The relationship between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton never fully returned to what it had been before their years as Mercedes teammates. Their rivalry reached such an intense level that some of the tension inevitably remained even after Nico Rosberg retired from Formula 1 immediately after winning the 2016 title.
Yet when asked to choose the greatest driver of all time after having the rare opportunity to compare himself directly with both Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg had no hesitation.
Speaking to Sky Deutschland, the 41-year-old chose Lewis Hamilton, particularly after watching the seven-time World Champion recover from a difficult first Ferrari season and then secure his first Grand Prix victory for the Scuderia in Barcelona. Nico Rosberg has already spoken about the change he has seen in Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari following that breakthrough.
“He is the greatest of all time,” Nico Rosberg explained. “It’s fantastic that he managed to turn things around, because last year it really looked dark and bleak. He was practically on his way home, and at any moment he could have said: ‘I’m retiring.’ But he persevered, now he feels comfortable in the car and you can sense a positive wave.”
Those words go beyond simple praise. Nico Rosberg is not merely placing Lewis Hamilton among Formula 1’s greats; he is putting him at the very top. That is especially significant because Rosberg spent years measuring his own ability against Lewis Hamilton under perhaps the clearest possible conditions: the same car, the same team and broadly the same opportunities.
Why Nico Rosberg’s 2016 title adds another dimension
This is also where the argument becomes more interesting. Taking Nico Rosberg’s assessment seriously does not necessarily mean accepting it without considering another interpretation. His opinion may be entirely sincere, and probably is, but there is inevitably an element of self-interest attached to it.
If Lewis Hamilton really is the greatest Formula 1 driver of all time, Nico Rosberg’s 2016 World Championship becomes an even more impressive achievement. The German would not simply have beaten an exceptional champion; he would have defeated the greatest driver in the sport’s history in the middle of one of Formula 1’s fiercest modern rivalries.
It is a narrative that naturally benefits Nico Rosberg as well. That does not make his judgement false, but describing Lewis Hamilton as the ultimate benchmark simultaneously magnifies the accomplishment of the only teammate who managed to beat him to a championship during their Mercedes years.
The 2016 season was hardly an ordinary campaign. Lewis Hamilton entered it having won two consecutive World Championships, while Mercedes was dominating Formula 1. The Hamilton-Rosberg rivalry reached its decisive stage, with Nico Rosberg eventually securing the championship by just five points over his teammate.
If the opponent he defeated was the greatest driver ever, that achievement inevitably gains even greater historical significance.
Lewis Hamilton’s records make Rosberg’s verdict difficult to dismiss
None of that should diminish Nico Rosberg’s argument. Even if there is a personal dimension behind the terminology he uses, Lewis Hamilton’s achievements make the conclusion anything but unreasonable.
Lewis Hamilton holds Formula 1’s outright record for Grand Prix victories and shares the record of seven World Championships with Michael Schumacher. Beyond the headline statistics, his career has also been defined by exceptional longevity, success across different regulations, cars and technical eras, and an impact on Formula 1 that extends beyond numbers alone.
His difficult first season with Ferrari raised questions over whether he could rediscover his best form, but the picture changed dramatically in 2026. Lewis Hamilton persevered through that difficult adaptation period and eventually delivered his first Ferrari Grand Prix victory in Barcelona, the turnaround that helped shape Nico Rosberg’s latest assessment.
Nico Rosberg may therefore benefit from presenting his former rival in a particular way, but that does not make his opinion any less authoritative. Lewis Hamilton unquestionably belongs to the small group of drivers with a legitimate claim to being among the greatest ever to compete in Formula 1.
Whether he is definitively number one is a question that can never really be settled. Comparing drivers from different generations means comparing radically different cars, regulations, levels of reliability and competitive environments. There is no objective formula capable of eliminating those differences.
There is, however, a curious consequence to Nico Rosberg’s verdict. If Lewis Hamilton truly is the greatest driver in Formula 1 history, then Nico Rosberg is the man who managed to beat the greatest in 2016. That may be the most intriguing aspect of his declaration.
Ralf Schumacher chooses Michael Schumacher instead
Nico Rosberg’s view is certainly not shared by Ralf Schumacher. The former Formula 1 driver has long held a much firmer position in comparisons between his brother Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, and his opinion has not changed.
Speaking in an interview with the Formel1.de YouTube channel, Ralf Schumacher again made clear that Michael Schumacher remains his benchmark.
“I have to say honestly, and not because he is my brother, that maybe Max Verstappen can change things during his career if he continues to drive like this, but for me what has always mattered is what Michael brought with him. There is nobody like him; Lewis Hamilton will never come close, not even remotely, at least from my point of view.”
There is, if anything, another form of self-interest in that judgement too – this time a family one.
The debate therefore remains open. On one side is Ralf Schumacher, who considers what Michael Schumacher brought to Formula 1 impossible to replicate. On the other is Nico Rosberg, a driver who experienced both worlds at close range and regards Lewis Hamilton as the ultimate reference.
Perhaps the simplest conclusion is also the hardest to dispute. There is no need to determine an undisputed number one to recognise that Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher belong to the highest tier of Formula 1 history.
For Nico Rosberg, however, Lewis Hamilton stands above even that level. And while such a description undoubtedly enhances the British driver’s legacy, it also inevitably adds another layer to the achievement of the man who managed to beat him once when a World Championship was on the line.
