The official news of Lewis Hamilton joining Scuderia Ferrari in 2025 has surprised many Formula 1 enthusiasts, starting with the members of the Mercedes team, with whom he will work throughout the 2024 Formula 1 campaign. However, it was hardly imaginable that this move would also be a twist for the family of the seven-time champion. Yet, that’s exactly what happened.
The incredible story of Nicolas Hamilton
Revealing this on social media was his stepbrother Nicolas, who is involved in the British Touring Car Championship. The 31-year-old, who has cerebral palsy, managed, after extensive therapy and motor re-education, to leave the wheelchair behind and become a professional driver, albeit behind the wheel of specially modified cars.
The phone call
Recalling what happened a few days ago, Nicolas admitted to being surprised by Lewis Hamilton’s communication about his decision to join Scuderia Ferrari at the end of the upcoming Formula 1 season, which occurred through a phone call: “It was very surprising – he recounted – I had just given a speech for Coca-Cola, and Lewis had called me the night before while I was having dinner, so I told him I would call him back.” – the British racing driver who currently competes in the British Touring Car Championship added.
“Later, I contacted him again, but he replied, telling me he was in bed. So I thought, ‘Okay, no worries.’ Then he asked if I was available, but at that point, I told him I was going to work and that I would be free later in the evening, and we could talk. However, he insisted, asking me if I could speak without being disturbed by anyone. I said yes, and he told me, ‘Well, I’ll be at Ferrari in 2025.’ My reaction was, ‘What, are you kidding? It’s insane!'”
