Lewis Hamilton has ruled out attending a planned FIA drivers’ meeting during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, insisting that he has already moved on from the five-second penalty he received following his collision with George Russell at Spa-Francorchamps.
The Ferrari driver was held fully responsible for the first-lap incident during last Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix. However, Lewis Hamilton does not intend to revisit the episode and believes the FIA is doing its best to apply Formula 1’s racing guidelines consistently.
Lewis Hamilton penalised for George Russell collision at Spa
Lewis Hamilton received a five-second penalty, to be served during his pit stop, after making contact with George Russell on the opening lap of the Belgian Grand Prix.
The stewards judged Lewis Hamilton to be wholly responsible for the collision. However, the Ferrari driver avoided a more severe 10-second penalty because two mitigating factors were taken into consideration: he had attempted to avoid the collision and had suffered a sudden snap of oversteer shortly before the contact.
FIA drivers’ meeting planned for Hungarian Grand Prix
Reports in recent days indicated that the Formula 1 drivers would meet with the FIA during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend to discuss the guidelines governing overtaking manoeuvres and on-track collisions.
The meeting was expected to address recent inconsistencies in the application of those guidelines, which have created a degree of confusion among drivers, teams and observers.
Lewis Hamilton says he will not attend the FIA meeting
When Sky Sports UK asked Lewis Hamilton about the planned meeting with the governing body, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion appeared completely unaware that it was due to take place.
“I don’t know anything about it. I really don’t know anything,” Lewis Hamilton said. “The meeting? I try to avoid those things. I don’t intend to be there, I won’t be there. I don’t know anything apart from the usual drivers’ briefing.”
His comments make it clear that Lewis Hamilton does not intend to become directly involved in the latest discussion surrounding the FIA’s approach to overtaking incidents and penalties.
Lewis Hamilton wants to move on from Belgian GP penalty
Lewis Hamilton was equally reluctant to return to the details of the George Russell collision or question the penalty imposed at Spa-Francorchamps.
“It’s not something I thought about coming into this weekend,” the Ferrari driver explained. “I’m sure they’ll look at it and assess the situation, and I think the FIA is doing its best to try to be consistent. Obviously, you can’t always achieve that consistency.”
“I’m not thinking about last weekend anymore. It happened, and I want to move on.”
Lewis Hamilton’s attention now turns fully towards Budapest, where his exceptional Hungarian Grand Prix record has raised Ferrari hopes. The team nevertheless arrives at the Hungaroring aware that its recent progress does not guarantee success, with Ferrari maintaining a cautious approach ahead of the Hungarian GP.
