Lewis Hamilton could be forced to start the 2026 Brazilian Grand Prix from the back of the grid as Ferrari continues investigating power unit problems following the final free practice session at Interlagos. The Maranello team is still working on the seven-time Formula 1 world champion’s engine, with a complete power unit replacement remaining a possibility ahead of qualifying.
The situation remains uncertain after FP3, with Ferrari facing a potentially significant decision over how to proceed. Replacing the entire power unit could result in additional grid penalties, although the team has yet to establish whether such an extensive intervention will be necessary.
Lewis Hamilton risks back-of-grid start as Ferrari investigates engine problems
Speaking on Sky Sport F1, Vicky Piria explained that Ferrari’s mechanics were continuing their work on Lewis Hamilton’s power unit and that the extent of the required repairs had not yet been determined.
“They’re still working on Hamilton’s engine. It isn’t certain that everything needs to be replaced, but if problems emerge, it might make sense to change the entire unit and start from the back. At that point, losing ten or fifteen positions would make little difference. For now, however, the situation is still unclear,” Vicky Piria explained.
The possibility of a complete replacement adds another complication to Ferrari’s preparations for qualifying at Interlagos. The team must determine whether the existing power unit can be used or whether introducing a complete replacement would be the more appropriate solution.
The uncertainty follows the engine problems Lewis Hamilton experienced during Brazilian GP FP3, which disrupted his final practice programme.
It also comes after earlier concerns surrounding Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari power unit allocation following the Mexican Grand Prix.
For now, the possibility of starting from the back remains conditional rather than confirmed. Ferrari’s final decision will depend on the outcome of its technical checks, with Lewis Hamilton’s starting position potentially affected by any further components the team chooses to replace.
