Lewis Hamilton finished the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix with his heart racing, not only from the adrenaline of the intense race but also due to a tense moment concerning his fuel level. In the closing laps, the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion was urgently requesting more fuel to attempt an overtaking manoeuvre on Alexander Albon but was simultaneously worried that he might not have enough remaining.
“I can’t attack because I don’t have fuel. Can I push or not?” Lewis Hamilton asked his race engineer Riccardo Adami over the team radio. Adami replied, “Hold on a moment.” The British driver then pressed for an update, saying, “Let me know.” His engineer calmly responded, “Stay where you are.”
At the end of the race, Lewis Hamilton resorted to a clever trick to save precious fuel. He switched off his engine and coasted through the pit lane in neutral gear, thereby consuming no fuel at all during that stretch. This tactic was likely critical, as Hamilton appeared to have reached the absolute limit of his fuel load and did everything possible to conserve every last drop before the mandatory post-race scrutineering.
At the time of writing, there have been no official rulings or penalties announced. However, all eyes remain on the race stewards as they review the situation and assess whether the Ferrari #44 driver complied with the regulations.
This incident echoes previous fuel-related controversies in Formula 1, where cars running under the minimum fuel limit risk disqualification. Hamilton’s fuel gamble in Belgium added another dramatic twist to an already thrilling race weekend.
