Lewis Hamilton is said to be increasingly optimistic about Ferrari’s long-term prospects, with reports suggesting the seven-time Formula 1 world champion believes the Scuderia could become genuine title contenders when the sport enters a new technical era in 2027.
After joining Ferrari ahead of the 2025 season in one of the biggest driver moves in Formula 1 history, Lewis Hamilton set his sights on achieving what no other driver has managed before: winning an unprecedented eighth world championship. While his first campaign with the Italian team proved challenging, the 2026 season has offered far more reasons for optimism as Ferrari continues to close the gap to the front of the field.
The British driver’s confidence has grown significantly following Ferrari’s recent progress. Victories, improved qualifying performances and steady development of the SF-26 have strengthened the belief that the Maranello-based team is moving in the right direction, even if Mercedes remains the benchmark in the current championship.
Lewis Hamilton reportedly believes new regulations could reshape the title fight
Although Ferrari has made encouraging progress during the 2026 Formula 1 season, most observers agree that Mercedes still holds the upper hand in both outright performance and consistency, making this year’s championship an extremely difficult target for the Scuderia.
However, according to respected Italian journalist Leo Turrini, Lewis Hamilton is convinced Ferrari’s biggest opportunity could arrive with the next major power unit evolution. The report claims the Ferrari driver believes the regulation changes expected for 2027 could significantly reduce the current performance gap and place the Italian team on equal footing with Mercedes.
The same report suggests Lewis Hamilton is increasingly confident that Ferrari will have all the ingredients required to mount a genuine Formula 1 World Championship campaign once those technical changes come into effect.
Ferrari has invested heavily in developing both its chassis and future power unit programme, and the team hopes the next phase of the regulations will provide an opportunity to reset the competitive order after Mercedes’ dominance under the current rules.
Lewis Hamilton remains focused on delivering an eighth world title
Despite looking ahead to Ferrari’s future prospects, Lewis Hamilton has made it clear that his motivation remains unchanged. Speaking during the build-up to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the Ferrari driver reiterated that he has no intention of giving up on his ambition of becoming Formula 1’s first eight-time world champion.
During Sky Sports F1’s preview programme, Lewis Hamilton received a huge ovation from the home crowd when the possibility of winning another championship was mentioned.
The seven-time world champion responded by making it clear that he would continue fighting until that objective became reality, reinforcing his determination to add another title to his remarkable Formula 1 career.
Ferrari still chasing Mercedes in straight-line performance
Throughout the 2026 season, Lewis Hamilton has repeatedly pointed to one area where Ferrari still trails its biggest rivals: power unit performance.
The Scuderia has made noticeable improvements through continuous development, but the SF-26 continues to give away valuable time on circuits where straight-line speed plays a decisive role. According to Lewis Hamilton, closing that deficit remains Ferrari’s biggest priority if the team wants to challenge consistently for victories.
The British driver has argued on several occasions that Ferrari’s chassis is already capable of competing at the front, believing that matching Mercedes’ engine performance would allow both himself and Charles Leclerc to fight for race wins on a regular basis.
Lewis Hamilton also acknowledged the scale of Mercedes’ advantage, pointing out that the Brackley-based team has won the majority of races this season despite introducing relatively few upgrades compared to several of its competitors.
In his view, Mercedes still appears to have untapped performance available, making Ferrari’s challenge even more demanding over the remainder of the campaign.
At the same time, Lewis Hamilton remains convinced Ferrari can continue reducing the gap through ongoing development. The team has introduced a series of aerodynamic refinements and mechanical upgrades throughout the season, while engineers continue working to improve both energy deployment and straight-line efficiency.
Although Lewis Hamilton accepts that Mercedes currently starts most weekends as the favourite, he believes there will still be opportunities for Ferrari to fight for victories on circuits that better suit the SF-26’s characteristics.
Looking further ahead, the seven-time world champion reportedly sees even greater potential once Formula 1 enters its next technical cycle. If Ferrari can successfully exploit the 2027 engine regulations while maintaining its recent progress in chassis development, Lewis Hamilton believes the Scuderia could finally have the package required to launch a sustained challenge for both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championships.
