Lewis Hamilton continues to prove that age is just a number in Formula 1. The seven-time world champion recently shared the podium in Monaco with two of the sport’s brightest young talents, Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Isack Hadjar, highlighting the growing generational shift currently taking place on the grid.
The Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli and the Red Bull racer Isack Hadjar will celebrate their 20th and 22nd birthdays respectively during the 2026 season. Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, turned 41 earlier this year, meaning that at the Monaco Grand Prix the Ferrari driver was almost the same age as his two fellow podium finishers combined.
A veteran among Formula 1’s new generation
Together with Fernando Alonso, Nico Hülkenberg and Valtteri Bottas, Lewis Hamilton represents the experienced guard in an increasingly youthful Formula 1 field.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli effectively became Lewis Hamilton’s successor at Mercedes when the seven-time world champion decided to embark on a new chapter with Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton’s move to Maranello accelerated the Italian driver’s promotion to Formula 1, and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is already reaping the rewards of that decision during Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s second season in the sport.
The young Italian has impressed throughout the campaign, combining raw speed with maturity beyond his years. His performances have strengthened Mercedes’ position at the front of the field and reinforced the belief that the Brackley-based team has secured one of Formula 1’s future stars.
Lewis Hamilton sees similarities with his own beginnings
Speaking during the post-race press conference in Monaco, Lewis Hamilton was full of praise for Andrea Kimi Antonelli and the environment that has helped him flourish: “Antonelli? He’s doing a phenomenal job,” Lewis Hamilton said. “He has an extraordinary team around him, with Bono, Toto and the rest of the team. And I’m really happy to see them doing what they do best.”
The Ferrari driver also admitted that watching the young Mercedes talent perform at such a high level motivates him to continue improving: “Seeing him performing at this level right now is fantastic. It encourages me to want to get better, and I think it encourages everyone to want to improve. And he’s only 19 years old, so just imagine what the future holds for him.”
Despite the age difference, Lewis Hamilton made it clear that he has no intention of stepping aside and is determined to continue fighting at the front throughout the season.
“But I’ll do my best to try and catch him for the rest of the year,” he added with a smile.
The seven-time world champion concluded by reflecting on the symbolic nature of standing on the podium alongside two drivers who represent the next generation of Formula 1 stars: “As I said, it’s truly a privilege to witness all of this, to be on the podium with two of the youngest guys here. They remind me very much of myself when I was here in 2007.”
For Lewis Hamilton, the moment was a reminder of his own remarkable Formula 1 debut season nearly two decades ago. For Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Isack Hadjar, meanwhile, it was further evidence that they are becoming key figures in the sport’s future. As the 2026 championship battle continues, the contrast between experience and youth is shaping up to be one of the season’s most compelling storylines.
