Lewis Hamilton has played down talk of challenging for the 2026 Formula 1 title, insisting that he remains focused on one race at a time despite occupying second place in the Drivers’ Championship. Ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, the Ferrari driver offered a restrained assessment of his first half of the season and refused to make ambitious predictions about what could follow after the summer break.
The Hungarian Grand Prix, taking place this weekend, is the final Formula 1 round before the championship pauses for its traditional summer shutdown. It is therefore a natural point for drivers to assess what they have achieved so far and consider their expectations for the second part of the campaign, which will begin at the end of August with the Dutch Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton refuses to look beyond the Hungarian GP
Lewis Hamilton was asked about both subjects during the opening press conference of the weekend, held as usual inside Ferrari’s hospitality unit. Given the considerable improvement he has made compared with his first season in red, it would have been understandable for the seven-time world champion to express greater excitement and ambition ahead of the second half of 2026.
The British driver is currently second in the championship and is chasing Mercedes leader Kimi Antonelli in the 2026 Formula 1 driver standings. Lewis Hamilton also ended his wait for a Ferrari Grand Prix victory by winning in Barcelona on June 14.
However, the driver of the number 44 Ferrari chose to keep his feet firmly on the ground rather than publicly commit himself to a title challenge.
“Am I thinking about the title for the second part of the season? I am not thinking about the second part,” Lewis Hamilton said. “I am thinking about this weekend, one race at a time, and trying to understand how to get the most out of every weekend. I generally do not think about what is going to happen ten races from now.”
Lewis Hamilton gives modest verdict on Ferrari season
Lewis Hamilton’s response was consistent with the cautious message Ferrari has carried into Budapest. Although the characteristics of the Hungaroring may offer the SF-26 some advantages, Charles Leclerc has already explained why Ferrari cannot simply assume Hungary will suit the car.
Perhaps even more surprising was Lewis Hamilton’s answer when asked to evaluate his own performance during the opening half of the campaign. Despite his victory in Spain and his position as Kimi Antonelli’s closest championship challenger, he offered only a measured assessment.
“The first part? It went well. Maybe slightly above average,” Lewis Hamilton said.
It was a brief response, but one that reflected both his concentration and his winning mentality. One victory in Ferrari colours is evidently not enough to satisfy a driver with Lewis Hamilton’s record, regardless of how significant the Barcelona breakthrough was.
Ferrari driver focused on adding to Barcelona victory
Mercedes and Kimi Antonelli remain the clear favourites in the championship battle, but Lewis Hamilton’s approach does not suggest any lack of ambition. Instead, his comments indicate that he wants to avoid being distracted by long-term calculations and concentrate on maximising each opportunity available to Ferrari.
The Hungaroring could provide another important chance. Lewis Hamilton’s exceptional record at the circuit has already raised hopes of a second Ferrari victory, while the team believes the low-speed nature of the track may be more favourable to the SF-26 than some of the circuits visited before the summer break.
Ferrari is nevertheless avoiding excessive optimism. Team expectations remain measured, with the Scuderia aware that Mercedes will retain important strengths around the Hungarian circuit despite the potential suitability of Ferrari’s car. The Ferrari and Mercedes Hungarian GP comparison highlights why the weekend may not be as straightforward as the circuit layout initially suggests.
For Lewis Hamilton, the immediate objective is therefore not to make predictions about the championship finale. His priority is to increase his points total as much as possible after the summer break, beginning with the task directly in front of him in Budapest.
