Lewis Hamilton has outlined an aggressive Ferrari upgrade plan for the second half of the 2026 Formula 1 season, revealing that further SF-26 developments are expected at almost every remaining race as the team attempts to close its performance deficit.
Following a difficult Hungarian Grand Prix, the seven-time world champion is approaching the next phase of the campaign with renewed confidence. Lewis Hamilton believes the work taking place at Maranello can deliver tangible gains over the coming months and help Ferrari return to the front of the championship battle.
Lewis Hamilton confirms frequent Ferrari upgrades
Lewis Hamilton acknowledged that Ferrari had spent the opening part of the season dealing with a significant performance disadvantage. He nevertheless regarded the first half of the campaign as positive when viewed against a straight-line deficit that he estimated at approximately three tenths.
The British driver emphasised that Ferrari’s engineers were working intensively to reduce that gap. Development of the SF-26 will not stop during the summer period, with Lewis Hamilton confirming that the Scuderia intends to introduce upgrades at virtually every race and has more new parts planned for the second half of the year.
That programme will be important after a Budapest weekend which ended as a painful missed opportunity for Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari. Although the team demonstrated encouraging potential before the break, it was unable to convert that promise into the result it expected.
Ferrari targeting performance gains after the summer break
Lewis Hamilton expects the period following Formula 1’s summer shutdown to become a turning point in his first season with Ferrari. Looking back across his career, he noted that he had generally produced his strongest form during the second half of a championship and predicted that the same pattern could emerge in 2026.
The break will therefore serve an important purpose beyond allowing Ferrari to prepare its next technical developments. Lewis Hamilton plans to use the pause to reset fully before returning in improved physical condition and with stronger mental preparation for the remaining rounds.
The 2026 campaign resumes with the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, beginning a demanding run in which Ferrari must turn its development work into consistent gains on the circuit. The complete 2026 Formula 1 calendar leaves the Maranello team with several opportunities to demonstrate whether its planned update programme can reduce the gap to its principal rivals.
Hamilton retains confidence in Ferrari’s championship prospects
Lewis Hamilton’s assessment reflects growing confidence in the work being completed behind the scenes at Maranello. The expectation is that a steady flow of upgrades, rather than one isolated development package, will progressively improve the SF-26 as the season advances.
Ferrari’s challenge will be to ensure that those technical gains translate into stronger and more consistent race weekends. The Hungarian Grand Prix demonstrated that underlying pace alone is not always enough, particularly when execution problems prevent the team from maximising its opportunities.
The Scuderia nevertheless remains focused on its championship objectives. Team principal Frédéric Vasseur has maintained Ferrari’s ambition in the 2026 Constructors’ Championship fight, while Lewis Hamilton’s confidence suggests the team still expects to play a leading role before the campaign concludes.
With more SF-26 upgrades scheduled and Lewis Hamilton anticipating a traditionally stronger phase of his season, Ferrari will return from the summer break aiming to transform its development effort into the sustained performance required to challenge at the front.
