Lewis Hamilton and learning Italian
Lewis Hamilton’s first words in Italian, spoken during his speech to the employees at the Maranello factory, immediately went viral. His pronunciation certainly brings a smile, as does the fact that his vocabulary seems almost entirely limited to words known worldwide: “buono,” “moltissimo,” “come stai? bene,” “buongiorno,” “sono emozionato.” Regardless of his learning journey, it’s significant that a seven-time F1 world champion is so eager to show he’s willing to study a language (almost entirely) new to him. It’s a way to communicate and better understand the world around him in the years to come.
“I started racing in Italy,” Lewis Hamilton explained in a press conference, “when I was 13. I worked with an Italian team and wanted to learn the language. I remember trying to stay close to the mechanics because I wanted to pick up some words. Speaking another language has always been one of my dreams, but the fact that I live in a country where English is spoken and there’s no real need to learn another makes things harder. Italian is still a language I would’ve liked to learn, even though I never really did.” – the former Mercedes driver added.
The reasons are also cultural: “I want people to know I’m willing to go above and beyond to integrate and contribute to the best of my potential. It’s definitely challenging to practice, and it’s difficult to always remember the words. But slowly, I’m getting there. Consistency will be key. This is also why I really enjoy being here in the factory because I can practice more and more every day.” – the seven-time Formula 1 world champion pointed out.
Sir Lewis Hamilton’s weak spot? Pizza
Living in Italy also means dealing with a few too many temptations regarding food: “The truth is, I’ve already eaten quite a few pizzas, but somehow I’ve lost weight. Last week, I had three! I love Italian food, I’ve always loved it. Pizza especially, but penne all’arrabbiata has always been my favorite dish. I’ll have to watch my diet; it’ll be difficult. If I eat pizza all year, I won’t be able to fit in the car anymore (laughs, ed.).” – the British driver concluded.
