Lewis Hamilton spoke about how important it is for Formula 1 to have a Grand Prix in Africa. The recent progress of the most important motorsport series is pushing several countries to try to enter the calendar for upcoming Formula 1 seasons. Among them are definitely several nations that would like to bring F1 back to Africa for a GP that would help the entire continent, as confirmed by Lewis Hamilton.
The seven-time world champion has always been very connected to the African continent and chose to spend his summer vacation there. The British driver decided to visit Morocco, Senegal, Benin, Mozambique, and Madagascar with some friends to take a break from the frenzy of Formula 1. “So many experiences that I will carry with me forever,” Lewis Hamilton wrote on social media.
“A Race in Africa Is Needed”
It has been more than thirty years since Formula 1 last held a Grand Prix in Africa, in 1993 at the Kyalami circuit, and according to Lewis Hamilton, we can’t wait any longer. “We can’t keep adding races in any part of the world without ever thinking about Africa,” said the British driver.
“There would definitely be a lot of work to do there. I think many people don’t know how vast and beautiful that continent is. And probably some don’t even know everything that continues to happen in those countries,” Lewis Hamilton added. “That’s why I believe that having a Grand Prix there would definitely help raise awareness about some places and bring tourism and everything that follows.” – the future Ferrari driver continued.
One of the main candidates seems to be Rwanda, although the necessary facilities are not yet in place. “The excuse for not going to Africa is that there are no circuits. In reality, there is one, and maybe we could use that one while other countries adapt,” Lewis Hamilton pointed out – “I will talk to Stefano Domenicali about it; I know he is pushing to reach an agreement. Rwanda is one of my favorite places. I have spoken with the organizers, and I know there is a nice project behind it.” – the seven-time Formula 1 world champion concluded.
