Lewis Hamilton has received a driving reprimand for impeding Liam Lawson during second practice at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with the stewards judging the incident severe enough to warrant more than the warning normally issued for a Free Practice infringement. It is the Ferrari driver’s second reprimand of the season.
The decision means the Briton escapes a grid penalty from the Baku incident itself, but the reprimand adds to his disciplinary tally. Drivers can accumulate four reprimands related to driving incidents during a season before a fifth results in a grid penalty, making each further offence increasingly significant as the championship continues.
Lewis Hamilton reprimanded after Lawson forced to lift in Baku
The stewards established that Lewis Hamilton was on an out lap while Liam Lawson was approaching on a flying lap. Ferrari had warned Hamilton twice that Lawson was closing, but the seven-time world champion did not follow the traffic-management procedure set out for that part of the Baku City Circuit.
The Race Director’s Competition Notes require cars travelling slowly or on out laps to remain on the extreme left between the exit of Turn 16 and the entry to Turn 18. Teams and drivers are also required to manage their gaps before Turn 18 so that cars can travel from the apex of Turn 18 to the apex of Turn 19 without interfering with anyone on a competitive lap.
Hamilton did not remain on the extreme left between Turns 16 and 18. As Lawson closed approaching Turn 19, the Ferrari stayed on the racing line, forcing Lawson to lift and brake slightly.
On that basis, the stewards determined that Hamilton had failed to follow the prescribed traffic-management instructions and had unnecessarily impeded Lawson.
Why the stewards considered the impeding severe
Under normal circumstances, an impeding infringement during Free Practice results in a warning unless the stewards consider the incident dangerous or intentional. In Hamilton’s case, the officials found no intent, but several factors increased the seriousness of the episode.
The stewards highlighted the layout of the circuit, the high-speed nature of the corners involved and the specific instructions issued by the Race Director for managing traffic through that section. Those elements led them to classify the impeding as severe enough to justify a driving reprimand rather than the standard warning.
The difficulty of managing energy deployment between Turns 16 and 19 was also considered. During the hearing, both Hamilton and Lawson explained that when a driver no longer has energy available to deploy, the resulting speed difference between two cars in that section can become substantial.
That detail was taken into account alongside the fact that Hamilton had been informed twice that Lawson was approaching. After weighing the circumstances, the stewards opted for a driving reprimand.
Hamilton now has two reprimands in 2026
The Azerbaijan ruling becomes Lewis Hamilton’s second reprimand of the 2026 Formula 1 season. No additional grid penalty has been imposed for the incident, so the immediate consequence is limited to the reprimand itself.
However, the decision increases the Briton’s season total and leaves less margin for any further driving-related offences. With the stewards specifically describing the Baku impeding as severe despite finding no intent, the incident underlines how closely traffic management is being monitored in the high-speed final sector of the Azerbaijan circuit.
