Lewis Hamilton reflects on unusual Baku Grand Prix
Ferrari disappointed once again at a circuit where it is usually quite strong. Saturday’s qualifying session did not go as expected, with Lewis Hamilton qualifying twelfth and Charles Leclerc tenth after putting his car into the wall.
During today’s Grand Prix, the two Ferrari drivers had a solid start but eventually got stuck in eighth and ninth positions, which is where they also finished the race. Overall, it was a rather uneventful race, and to make matters worse, Mercedes overtook the Italian team in the Constructors’ Championship. Clearly, something is not going the right way, and Lewis Hamilton is well aware of it.
“Unusual” race, according to the seven-time world champion
“We will investigate and understand what we could have done differently. Certainly, operationally, we should have performed better yesterday. However, as I mentioned, I felt I made some progress today as well. The car and pace were decent, but the others were very fast too, so overtaking was nearly impossible,” admitted the British driver.
“It was quite an unusual race in Baku, with very few overtakes, and it was really difficult to follow the cars ahead. I am definitely disappointed to come away from this race with nothing in hand,” he concluded.
Lewis seems to get his hopes up every Friday only to be disappointed on Sunday—a rather frustrating path for the seven-time world champion. If Ferrari truly wants to secure second place in the championship, it will need to make real improvements, as even the drivers appear to be reaching their limit.
