Lewis Hamilton finished second in the Sprint Race at his home British Grand Prix after leading the opening stages around Silverstone. The Ferrari driver held onto first place off the line but was eventually unable to defend against the superior straight-line speed of Mercedes, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli completing the decisive overtake midway through the race.
Second place in the Silverstone Sprint for Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton crossed the finish line in second position in the Sprint Race at the British Grand Prix, delivering another encouraging performance for Ferrari in front of his home fans at Silverstone.
The seven-time Formula 1 world champion maintained the lead when the lights went out and initially attempted to build a gap to the chasing pack. However, around the halfway point of the race, he could no longer defend against the attack from Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
The Mercedes driver completed the overtake on the Hangar Straight, benefiting from a remarkable speed advantage of 26 km/h over the Ferrari as he powered past Lewis Hamilton.
“Will Mercedes now copy my energy management? I don’t know. I can’t predict what Mercedes will do,” Lewis Hamilton told Sky Sport. “I imagine they’ve made some changes and tried something, just like we have. I can only focus on my own work; I can’t spend time thinking about what Mercedes are doing.
“We know they’re very strong on the straights, but yesterday we delivered a very good performance. The car gives me a great feeling overall, and the team, everyone back at the factory, is doing a truly fantastic job. We simply have to keep pushing and wait for the day when we manage to close the gap in terms of power. Once we achieve that, we’ll be able to fight properly.”
Despite the Sprint defeat, Lewis Hamilton remains focused on his own progress and the ongoing development work at Ferrari, hopeful that continued improvements will soon allow him to battle with Mercedes on more equal terms.
