The 2026 season could be Lewis Hamilton’s final year in Formula 1: a former driver has no doubts about the future retirement of Ferrari’s British star.
The difficulties experienced last year even led to speculation about a possible early retirement for Lewis Hamilton, before the natural expiration of the contract that ties him to Ferrari. The British driver often made rather harsh comments about his own performances, at times even suggesting that the Scuderia should consider changing drivers due to his struggles to adapt. The alarm later subsided, however, and the former Mercedes driver used the winter break to recharge his batteries and rediscover his motivation ahead of a 2026 season that will be absolutely crucial for both himself and the team from Maranello.
Some doubts remain about his future in the paddock
Despite this reset, there are those who have openly admitted to having serious doubts about the seven-time world champion’s long-term presence in the Formula 1 paddock. “You never know what will happen. Nico Rosberg announced his retirement just a few days after winning the drivers’ title, leaving everyone speechless. Will Lewis do something like that? I don’t think so. He has a pride and competitiveness that push him to leave the sport in the right way, and for that reason he can’t walk away after a season like the one that has just ended,” said Romain Grosjean.
The former Haas driver then went on to explain how much longer he expects to see the number 44 on the grid. “I think 2026 could be one of his last years in Formula 1. He’s not that young anymore, he’s been racing since 2007 and next season will be his nineteenth year. This is a sport that demands a lot from you, and there comes a point when all you want to do is stay at home,” Romain Grosjean continued.
Lewis Hamilton’s future will largely depend on how competitive Ferrari proves to be under the new technical regulations. If the SF-26 turns out to be a genuine championship-contending car, the situation could change very quickly. On the other hand, another season similar to the one that has just concluded could push the former Mercedes driver to finally say goodbye to the Formula 1 paddock.
For veteran champions and new teams alike, the upcoming championship represents more than just a new set of rules; it is a definitive “make-or-break” moment that will likely shape the legacy of the grid’s biggest stars and define the competitive hierarchy for years to come.
