“It’s easier to get on the podium with Mercedes than to learn Italian,” Lewis Hamilton said today in Monaco in response to a question during the press meeting held this afternoon at the Mercedes hospitality.
We saw a relaxed and approachable driver, always ready to answer the many questions posed by the numerous journalists present at the press conference in view of the Monaco Grand Prix. He smiled at the question when asked whether it was easier to get on the podium this year or learn Italian by the beginning of 2025.
Surprisingly, he replied that the difficulties with the Italian language scare him more than the competitiveness of his car. “Compared to the last two years, the car has definitely improved. I don’t know how this weekend will go, but I am confident we can do well. Certainly better than in 2022 and 2023.” – he explained.
Moreover, Lewis Hamilton emphasized how “this car is much more fun to drive and, even though I’m not competing for the win, it’s still a great challenge for me to improve our package to get back to fighting for important positions. The car’s performance window seems to be making significant progress. I hope this will be evident already in Monaco.”
When asked about his goal for the race in the Principality, the British driver replied: “Monte Carlo is a special place, ever since I watched the races on television as a kid. I don’t know what to expect. Our rivals are ahead, so it’s important for us to qualify well, and in that, I need to improve a lot since my teammate has been doing better at the start of the season. I am convinced we can have a good race.” – the former Ferrari driver added.

In short, Lewis Hamilton has more confidence in the Mercedes team than in his language-learning abilities. Even though, as he said a few days after announcing his signing with Scuderia Ferrari, he will try to learn Italian. However, at the moment, he considers it simpler to reach the podium with a Mercedes that has at least three teams ahead of it. Is he too optimistic about his team’s recovery capabilities or too pessimistic about his learning skills? We’ll know in a few months.
