Lewis Hamilton has revealed what happened during Ferrari’s private meeting with Charles Leclerc and Fred Vasseur in São Paulo, confirming that neither driver made any demands as they sought to resolve their recent differences. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion explained that the discussion allowed both drivers to express their views, identify areas for improvement and move forward after a period of tension within the team.
Speaking to Sky Sports UK, Lewis Hamilton insisted that the meeting was not simply a case of Fred Vasseur stepping in to settle a dispute. Instead, the two Ferrari drivers sat down together, discussed their concerns and reaffirmed their mutual respect, with the hope of avoiding similar problems in future races.
Ferrari tensions ease after private meeting in São Paulo
Relations inside the Ferrari garage appear to have become less strained following Thursday evening’s meeting. Earlier that day, Lewis Hamilton had still seemed deeply frustrated by what happened on the opening lap of the Belgian Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion had made some particularly pointed remarks about Charles Leclerc, explaining that he was still waiting for a decisive conversation with his teammate.
That conversation finally took place on Thursday evening, when Fred Vasseur and Charles Leclerc arrived together at a hotel in São Paulo. As both the French team principal and the Monegasque driver subsequently explained, the three Ferrari representatives discussed the situation and agreed to put their differences behind them, recognising the importance of acting in the best interests of the company and the team.
The meeting followed a period of tension between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc ahead of the São Paulo Grand Prix, with the relationship between the two teammates attracting considerable attention.
However, Lewis Hamilton’s own account of the discussions was still missing. As is often the case with one of Ferrari’s drivers, the Briton had been excused from Friday’s media interviews, meaning his explanation only emerged later.
Lewis Hamilton reveals what was discussed with Charles Leclerc
Speaking to Sky Sports UK, Lewis Hamilton began by clarifying the nature of Fred Vasseur’s involvement, without expressing any criticism of the Ferrari team principal.
“It’s not as though Fred sorted things out between Charles and me,” Lewis Hamilton explained. “We sat down, we talked and we cleared the air. And we’re moving forward. I think we still have enormous respect for each other. Sometimes, in situations like these, you simply need to talk.”
The seven-time world champion then made it clear that neither driver had attempted to impose conditions on the other during the discussion.
“There were no demands from either side. We simply expressed our opinions, identifying the areas where we can improve and support each other. So hopefully, from now on, we can have better races.”
His explanation also provides further context to the recent debate surrounding Ferrari’s approach to managing its two drivers, with the emphasis now placed on communication, mutual support and improving their performances on track.
Ferrari hopes for a lasting resolution between Hamilton and Leclerc
Lewis Hamilton’s comments suggest that the immediate disagreement has been addressed, with both drivers apparently willing to move on. The Briton emphasised that their mutual respect remains intact and that their conversation centred on understanding each other’s perspective rather than making demands.
The situation also places renewed attention on the relationship between Ferrari’s two drivers, whose season-long head-to-head performances continue to be an important part of the team’s campaign.
But will this prove to be a temporary truce or a lasting peace? Lewis Hamilton’s latest remarks are certainly very similar to those made at Monza, leaving the question of whether Ferrari has finally found a lasting solution to its internal tensions.
