Lewis Hamilton has expressed strong support for Kimi Antonelli, the young Mercedes driver, who has demonstrated that he is ready for the challenges of Formula 1 despite the difficulties he has faced on track and his young age.
The seven-time world champion, who began his Formula 1 career at the age of 22, wanted to emphasize that Antonelli, even at only 18 years old, has already shown enormous potential and talent.
A talent ready for the challenge
Kimi Antonelli’s Formula 1 season has had its ups and downs, but despite the inconsistencies, Lewis Hamilton remains firmly convinced that the young driver is prepared to face the demanding challenges of the highest level of motorsport.
Antonelli scored his first European championship point at the Hungarian Grand Prix, though his performances had been somewhat inconsistent prior to that moment. Despite a promising start with Mercedes, certain technical updates, particularly to the rear suspension, disrupted his positive momentum.
“I always try to let Kimi know that I’m here for him,” Lewis Hamilton stated. “I think it’s always important to let people know they’re not alone.”
Using his own early career as a point of reference, Lewis Hamilton highlighted just how well Antonelli started the season and explained that now it is simply a matter of building on his experience based on his natural capabilities.
“He is 18 years old. Honestly, I wasn’t ready at 18,” added the Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton. “He clearly is, because he’s done an excellent job this year, especially in the first half of the season. He clearly has the skills to succeed; it’s just a matter of experience. It’s very difficult when you want to be successful, with all the pressure around you and everything else — sometimes it’s hard to manage.”
“But I think Kimi is doing really well, and he’s a really great guy.”
With Lewis Hamilton’s support and the determination that Kimi Antonelli has already demonstrated, his future with Mercedes looks promising despite the initial hurdles he has faced.
