Imola marks Lewis Hamilton’s first home Grand Prix since joining Ferrari. While he was previously seen as an “outsider” at the Italian circuit, he is now warmly welcomed by the Ferrari fans. Taking advantage of his arrival in red, the Sky Sport Italia team questioned the Briton on several topics, including the future of Formula 1.
2025 will be the final year of the regulations introduced in 2022. It’s also the cycle that saw the decline of Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton, with Red Bull and Max Verstappen “taking the crown.” This, before handing over to McLaren, who after the 2024 Constructors’ title, now seem destined for complete dominance this season.
2026, on the other hand, will be a year full of unknowns; the cars will be significantly redesigned, becoming smaller but likely slower. Not only that, it’s also the year when Adrian Newey’s influence on Aston Martin is expected to become evident, potentially adding another top team to the mix.
And let’s not forget the entry of the eleventh team, Cadillac. In short, as with any proper regulation change, next season will be a fresh start for everyone.
“This is not the right direction”
With time available to speak with Lewis Hamilton, the Sky Sport Italia team asked the Briton what he thought of the direction Formula 1 is taking. “I don’t think the direction that’s been taken is the right one,” he revealed – “The cars are becoming heavier, even though next year they might get a bit lighter. The current ones are the heaviest we’ve ever raced.”
Another element the Ferrari driver misses dearly is the iconic sound of the cars, which has now been lost. “The noise meant everything to me. As a kid, it was the sound that made me fall in love with Formula 1. Now it’s completely gone. I understand the importance of sustainability and the right direction for the world, but it’s not the same anymore.”
Lewis Hamilton also spoke about the upcoming changes to the DRS system starting next year. “The front and rear DRS is interesting. Maybe it’ll be great, but if it doesn’t work, we’ll have to start from scratch and find a new direction.”
