At the age of 41, many critics are speculating that legendary F1 driver Lewis Hamilton’s time on the track may be up. His first campaign for Ferrari in 2025 was not the one he would have wished for, and the driver struggled. It was the first season in his career that he failed to finish on the podium. Yet, the veteran seems to be extremely dismissive of the concept and has added that “a lot of people are trying to retire me”.
What Could Retirement Look Like for Hamilton?
Luckily, 2026 has been marginally better. So far, he has had a podium place at his second race in China, the first for Ferrari. In Japan and Miami, however, he seemed to be lacking in comparison to his teammate Charles Leclerc.
Hamilton is unlikely to retire fully, being an ambitious, active individual. Income will not be an issue for him, with his likeness being enough to bring in money through sponsorships, ambassador programmes, and more.
Even the iGaming sector now offers lucrative options to be included in celebrity slots and games. Titles such as Frankie Dettori’s Roulette are providing retired athletes with income streams across Great Britain casino platforms. These links between casinos and sports are becoming more prevalent with games like European Football Roulette. Licensing an image from one of the UK’s biggest motorsport legends would be a huge boost.
Aside from this, he may choose to stay at the track in another role. This could be as an advisor, in coaching, or in management. Knowledge and experience of that quality would also come in handy for broadcasting, and he may even be seen around the pit with David Coulthard in the near future.
His Future at Ferrari

Jenson Button is one voice that has backed Hamilton, saying that he should not retire for another year. He spoke about how Hamilton spent time at Mercedes, where he understood the language, and how the team worked.
Button added that “Lewis this year has shown he has still got the speed. I have no idea if he will carry on beyond this season, but I don’t see why he wouldn’t.” This is a contradiction to other former drivers like Ralf Schumacher, who has publicly stated that it is time for Hamilton to retire. Schumacher argued drivers like Hamilton need to give younger drivers a chance to succeed.
Originally, his contract length at Ferrari was not disclosed. This was until Hamilton himself noted that his contract would run until the end of 2027, suggesting he still has a season left in him after this one. Hamilton has made it clear he’s happy to stay around for a while and that the speculation is incorrect.
Ultimately, it will be Ferrari who decides what happens. If his form does not improve, they may take the decision out of his hands. Until that moment, it seems Hamilton will continue to be one of the foremost drivers of his generation and keep on racing.
