Lewis Hamilton was checked by the FIA medical team after feeling unwell following the Singapore Grand Prix, Ferrari has confirmed. The seven-time World Champion was subsequently given permission by the governing body to miss his post-race media-pen interviews.
The development came after a physically demanding race at Marina Bay and meant Lewis Hamilton was unable to publicly address another major talking point from his afternoon: the decision not to stop during the Virtual Safety Car period.
Lewis Hamilton feels unwell after Singapore GP
Ferrari confirmed that Lewis Hamilton did not feel well after the race and was examined by the FIA medical team. Following that assessment, the governing body allowed the British driver to skip his scheduled media-pen interviews.
Images circulated online showing Lewis Hamilton down on his knees after climbing out of his Ferrari. The Singapore Grand Prix is one of the most physically demanding events on the Formula 1 calendar because of the intense heat and humidity faced by the drivers throughout the race.
Singapore strategy question remains unanswered
Lewis Hamilton’s absence from the post-race interview area also meant there was no opportunity for him to provide a fuller explanation of what happened when Ferrari expected him to stop under the Virtual Safety Car.
The episode had already created contrasting explanations immediately after the race. Over team radio, Lewis Hamilton took responsibility for the strategic decision and apologised to Ferrari: “Sorry guys, I let you down with that strategy. The decision was mine, it cost us valuable points.”
Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur, however, offered a slightly different description when speaking to Sky Italia, suggesting that the driver “missed” the pit entry. The precise sequence therefore remains an important point of discussion after Singapore, particularly because the decision had significant consequences for Lewis Hamilton’s final result. Ferrari’s pit-stop and strategy performance can also be explored through the Ferrari Pit Stop & Strategy Statistics.
For the moment, however, the immediate post-race focus is also on the fact that Lewis Hamilton required an FIA medical check after feeling unwell and was formally excused from his media obligations.
