In 2020, at a time when the world was still deeply affected by the coronavirus pandemic and the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, multiple world champion Lewis Hamilton decided to make his voice heard by joining several initiatives. First and foremost, he became a supporter of the “Black Lives Matter” movement, involving fellow drivers and even his own team—Mercedes went as far as changing its livery—until Formula 1 itself launched initiatives such as “We Race As One.”
Building on this momentum, in 2021 Lewis Hamilton founded a charitable organization called Mission 44, with the aim of promoting inclusion and diversity from schools all the way to motorsport, particularly within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The primary goal is to support young people in their education from an early age and then help them integrate into the workforce, ultimately finding employment within motorsport.
Mission 44 reaches more than half a million young people
As happens every year, in the final days of December the foundation released an update on the results achieved so far. On this occasion, it was Lewis Hamilton himself—Ferrari driver from January 2025—who shared the message: “Honestly, establishing Mission 44 has been one of the achievements I am most proud of. We are working hard to drive change and create a fairer and more inclusive future for children around the world. So far, we have reached over half a million young people in the UK, the United States, and Brazil, and it has been a real privilege to meet and host many of them at Grand Prix events,” he said in a video released by Mission 44.
“Meeting our incredible motorsport scholars at Silverstone this year was a real highlight, and I’m truly proud of the scholarship we’ve been able to provide them. It’s amazing to see students securing jobs in Formula 1, so we’re witnessing real progress. Thank you to everyone for the incredible work and for being part of this mission. There is still so much more to come,” concluded the seven-time world champion enthusiastically.
