During the most recent meeting of the Formula 1 Commission, several potential rule changes for the 2026 season were discussed — including a key question for many fans: will drivers be allowed to change their racing numbers?
On 14 November 2025, the F1 Commission evaluated a series of new proposals set to come into effect from 2026, and among them was the possibility for drivers to change their race numbers during their careers. This idea represents a major shift from the current permanent-number system introduced in 2014, which has offered drivers a certain degree of personalisation, although with clear limitations.
As reported by the FIA through its official channels, the latest Commission meeting also covered the topic of driver race numbers. The Commission stated: “Modifications to the regulations on permanent driver numbers, introduced for the 2014 season, were also discussed. It was agreed that a proposal allowing drivers to change their number during their career will be permitted.”
If the proposal is approved, starting from 2026 drivers will be able to change their race number from one season to the next, reshaping a system that has been in place for more than a decade. This could lead to a significant shift, considering how iconic certain numbers have become — such as Lewis Hamilton’s #44, Sebastian Vettel’s #5, or Max Verstappen’s #33. Of course, drivers will still be free to keep their current number should they wish to.
For now, no additional details have been released about how this change would be implemented. However, it is reasonable to expect that the #1 would remain reserved for the reigning World Champion, as stated in the current regulations. In any case, this new approach would give drivers greater freedom and fewer restrictions when choosing the number they proudly display on their livery.
