Lewis Hamilton endured one of the most challenging campaigns of his Formula 1 career during the 2025 season, his first year as a Ferrari driver after leaving Mercedes. The highly anticipated move to Maranello was meant to reignite Lewis Hamilton’s title ambitions and put him in contention for an eighth world championship, but reality proved far more complicated. On and off the track, the season became a story of adaptation, frustration, and scrutiny — even extending to Lewis Hamilton’s relationship with social media.
Throughout the year, Lewis Hamilton struggled to extract consistent performance from the Ferrari SF25, a car that failed to suit his driving style and lacked the balance needed to fight at the front. Despite Ferrari’s historical stature and high expectations, the Briton never truly entered the championship fight. Instead, he found himself battling in the midfield far more often than anticipated, a stark contrast to the success he enjoyed during his dominant years with Mercedes.
The statistics from the season underlined just how difficult the transition was. Lewis Hamilton became the first Ferrari driver to be eliminated in Q1 on three consecutive occasions and also set an unwanted record as the Scuderia driver with the most race starts without scoring a single podium finish. While his teammate Charles Leclerc managed to maximize the car’s potential on several occasions, Lewis Hamilton continued to search for answers in a campaign that offered little respite.
At the end of the season finale in Abu Dhabi, Lewis Hamilton spoke about his desire to step away from the constant noise surrounding Formula 1. He indicated that the winter break would be used to completely disconnect, stepping back from communication and online platforms after what had been an emotionally draining year. The intention, as he explained at the time, was to reset mentally before returning stronger for the future.
However, the off-season unfolded somewhat differently. Despite signaling a digital detox, Lewis Hamilton remained visible online, sharing snapshots of his life away from the racetrack. He posted images from a visit to a Lululemon store in London, promoted updates related to the F1 Movie featured in the F1 25 video game, and later shared photos from a trip to New York City. One image posted from Manhattan quickly caught attention, accompanied by a short caption expressing his affection for the city.
This online activity prompted a reaction from fans, with one follower questioning whether the Ferrari driver had truly stepped away from social media. Lewis Hamilton responded with a brief but telling message, explaining that maintaining balance was the key. The concise reply quickly circulated among Formula 1 fans, highlighting how even Lewis Hamilton’s smallest interactions continue to attract significant attention.
From a sporting perspective, the contrast within Ferrari was evident by the end of the season. Lewis Hamilton finished sixth in the drivers’ standings with 156 points, while Charles Leclerc ended the year with 242 points. The Monegasque driver reached the podium on seven occasions and consistently outperformed his teammate, underlining Ferrari’s internal gap during a year in which the team failed to win a single race.
As the season progressed, attention also turned toward Lewis Hamilton’s working relationship with his race engineer, Riccardo Adami. Reports emerged following the Miami Grand Prix suggesting tensions within the garage, sparked by sarcastic radio messages that hinted at internal frustration. Lewis Hamilton later downplayed those claims, emphasizing that disagreements were a normal part of a competitive driver-engineer partnership at the highest level of motorsport.
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur later addressed Lewis Hamilton’s first season with the Scuderia, acknowledging that improvements were needed in communication and collaboration. When asked whether Ferrari might consider changes on the engineering side, Fred Vasseur confirmed that the team was reviewing every possible option in order to better support Lewis Hamilton moving forward.
It also emerged that Lewis Hamilton had explored the possibility of reuniting with his long-time race engineer Peter Bonnington during the move to Ferrari. However, Bonnington opted to remain with Mercedes and took on the role of race engineer for Kimi Antonelli starting in 2025, leaving Lewis Hamilton to build new relationships within Ferrari.
As Ferrari looks ahead, Lewis Hamilton’s challenging debut season serves as a reminder that even the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history face periods of transition. With Charles Leclerc firmly established within the team and major regulation changes approaching, the coming seasons will be critical in determining whether Lewis Hamilton can rediscover his form and turn his Ferrari chapter into a successful one — both on the track and beyond the headlines.
