Ferrari, Vasseur “calls” Lewis Hamilton: the plan to put him back at the center of the 2026 project
While Lewis Hamilton has chosen to step completely away from motorsport temporarily to recharge after a challenging 2025 season, work at Ferrari’s Maranello headquarters has not stopped. Frederic Vasseur, team principal of Scuderia Ferrari, is engaged in a persistent effort to convince the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion, with the clear objective of putting him back at the center of the team as they prepare for the 2026 regulatory challenge.
The 2025 season and Hamilton’s “wounds”
Lewis Hamilton’s first year with Ferrari was anything but simple. Beyond the results on track, the British driver felt a certain technical detachment: throughout 2025, he was often not fully consulted on several crucial decisions, ranging from car upgrades to internal procedures. It is no secret that Hamilton was also dissatisfied with certain aspects of Ferrari’s simulator, which he considered below his usual high standards. This atmosphere led Hamilton to seek complete isolation during this winter break, focusing on rest and recovery after a year that had tested him both physically and mentally.
Vasseur’s strategy: Hamilton as the “glue”
Frederic Vasseur, however, has not given up. Through frequent messages and ongoing dialogue, he is attempting to stimulate the British driver and maintain his connection with the team. Vasseur understands that with Charles Leclerc never more motivated and ready to take technical leadership in 2026, Ferrari needs a Lewis Hamilton who acts as a catalyst for the entire racing department, rather than demoralizing the garage with a withdrawn or disengaged attitude.
“Fred Vasseur’s objective is clear: to make Lewis understand that in 2026 he will once again be at the center of the project, transforming him into the glue necessary for the definitive step up in performance,” Ferrari insiders explain.
Will it really work in practice?
The real challenge will be to balance Charles Leclerc’s hunger for success, as he sees the new regulations as the opportunity of a lifetime, with Lewis Hamilton’s desire for redemption and renewed motivation. Frederic Vasseur is convinced that a motivated Lewis Hamilton will be constructive for the entire team, boosting morale and driving development. However, the true test will come on the track. The first technical evolutions of the 2026 Ferrari car, expected to be tested in Barcelona, will reveal whether this “iron pact” between the two drivers can withstand the initial tensions of the Formula 1 World Championship.
