Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are taking two very different paths with Ferrari’s SF-26. Why Lewis Hamilton stopped using Ferrari’s simulator while Charles Leclerc relies on it.

Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari 2026 F1

Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have adopted two distinctly different approaches to developing and setting up Ferrari’s SF-26, bringing the team’s simulator correlation back into focus. While Hamilton has not used Ferrari’s simulator since the Canadian Grand Prix, preferring to trust his instincts and the feedback he receives on the track, Leclerc considers factory simulation work an essential part of understanding the car.

Simulator or no simulator: that has become one of Ferrari’s most intriguing technical questions during the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship. The season has so far unfolded positively for the Maranello team, with the SF-26 proving competitive, benefiting from consistent development and, above all, progressing in the right direction.

Ferrari has claimed two victories across the opening nine races, establishing the SF-26 as the only genuine alternative to the Mercedes W17. Mercedes remains the championship benchmark, although the German team has also encountered more than one reliability problem during the campaign.

One matter, however, continues to generate discussion within the Ferrari environment: the simulator. At present, the contrasting approaches of the two drivers do not appear to be creating any negative consequences, but the issue could eventually become a limiting factor for the Italian team.

Lewis Hamilton has stopped using the Ferrari simulator

On one side of the debate is Lewis Hamilton, who confirmed during the Belgian Grand Prix media day that he has not used Ferrari’s simulator since the Canadian Grand Prix. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion explained that the behaviour and data produced by Maranello’s so-called “Spider” simulator are not being replicated sufficiently when he drives the real car on the circuit.

As a result, Lewis Hamilton prefers to rely on his instincts and the sensations communicated directly by the SF-26 on the asphalt. His approach is now clear: complete as little simulator work as possible during the week, arrive at the circuit with a theoretical baseline set-up prepared alongside the engineers and then develop it exclusively through running on the track.

It is a philosophy based primarily on driver feedback and practical experience rather than extensive virtual preparation. That distinction is particularly significant ahead of Spa-Francorchamps, where teams must find a difficult compromise between straight-line efficiency and performance through the circuit’s faster corners. Ferrari’s evaluation of that balance is also being supported by the latest technical upgrades seen in the Belgian Grand Prix pit lane.

Hamilton trusts his feelings while Leclerc follows the data

Lewis Hamilton’s strategy has delivered results so far. The only possible exception came at Silverstone, where the British driver and his engineering group may have fallen into a form of over-tuning. They had initially identified a particularly effective baseline set-up, which Charles Leclerc subsequently adopted before going on to win the race, but Hamilton admitted that mistakes were made before qualifying.

In particular, the team worked too aggressively on the front end of Lewis Hamilton’s car. That intervention produced troublesome understeer and limited the SF-26’s performance for the remainder of the weekend. Even so, this was a relatively minor issue within an otherwise positive overall picture achieved without placing significant reliance on simulator work.

Charles Leclerc is following the opposite path. During the media day ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, the Monegasque driver revealed that he had spent a considerable amount of time in Ferrari’s simulator during the week. His objective was to understand the source of the car improvements that the team had not anticipated before the British Grand Prix.

Charles Leclerc said he had found encouraging indications and identified both a direction and a potential area of development. Those conclusions will naturally need to be confirmed on the circuit, beginning with the opening free practice session at Spa-Francorchamps. The Belgian venue should provide a demanding test of the SF-26 and of Ferrari’s expectations for the Spa weekend.

Ferrari therefore has two completely different philosophies operating within the same garage. Lewis Hamilton favours a more traditional approach centred on feeling, instinct and the experience acquired through real-world running. Charles Leclerc, by contrast, continues to believe in simulation and in the preparatory work completed at the Maranello factory.

Ferrari simulator correlation must be improved for 2027

This difference inevitably raises a major question: how accurate is the correlation between Ferrari’s simulator and the track? If a driver with Lewis Hamilton’s experience, who has spent years working with increasingly advanced simulation technology, decides to abandon it because the behaviour he experiences at Maranello cannot be reproduced on the circuit, some aspect of the correlation probably still requires recalibration.

The situation does not appear to be harming Ferrari in the immediate term. Over the medium and long term, however, it could become an important limitation because modern Formula 1 development is increasingly virtual. Track testing is tightly restricted, with running extremely limited and often confined to filming days, when teams must also accommodate requirements connected to television production.

The main opportunities to develop and understand a new car are now concentrated around pre-season testing. Teams received more running days this year, but only four days will be available in 2027. That reduction will make reliable simulation and accurate correlation even more important when Ferrari begins validating its next Formula 1 challenger.

During the championship, the combination of filming days, Pirelli tyre tests and an increasing number of Sprint weekends leaves drivers and engineers with very little time to verify a car’s behaviour. Sprint events remove additional free practice sessions, even though those sessions remain the most valuable opportunity to establish whether a car is genuinely following the correct development path.

For this reason, Ferrari will need to address simulator-to-track correlation with growing attention. The team’s 2027 car, which is already being developed in Maranello’s technical offices, will emerge from a combination of information gathered on the circuit and the predictions produced by the simulation systems used by Ferrari’s racing department.

Correlation will also matter when evaluating data from unfamiliar venues. Ferrari recently gathered its first real-world information at the new Madrid circuit, where Charles Leclerc shared his initial impressions of the street track. Accurately matching that track feedback with factory models will become increasingly important as physical testing opportunities continue to shrink.

Spa will test Ferrari’s two development philosophies

For now, Ferrari does not appear to have a concrete simulator problem. Nevertheless, seeing two drivers from the same team follow such contrasting technical paths makes it reasonable to question whether there are still areas that need to be refined.

Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc will continue with their respective methods for the time being. Beyond the simulator discussion, Hamilton has also raised concerns about other defining elements of the current technical era, including battery-driven overtaking in Formula 1.

Spa-Francorchamps will now provide an important early test. With its unusually demanding set-up compromise, the Belgian circuit should offer useful evidence about which Ferrari philosophy produces the better result: Charles Leclerc’s reliance on simulation and factory data, or Lewis Hamilton’s preference for instinct, track experience and direct feedback from the SF-26.
