Lewis Hamilton: “Sad for the team, never had oversteer at that point. Mentally I feel good”
Despite crashing out of the Dutch Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton described the weekend in Zandvoort as “really solid,” highlighting progress with Ferrari’s SF-25 and insisting he was mentally in a strong place.
Lewis Hamilton hits the wall
Lewis Hamilton’s words after qualifying at Zandvoort proved to be almost prophetic, when he had described his Ferrari SF-25 as “unpredictable.” His crash on lap 23 at the exit of Turn 3 was triggered by exactly that kind of unexpected behavior from the car. “I really didn’t expect it,” said the seven-time world champion. “It happened all of a sudden, it was so unusual… I’ve never had oversteer at that point before, so I honestly don’t understand what happened.”
The British driver explained that he felt capable of climbing a few more positions during the race: “I felt that we had made a lot of progress this weekend and I was starting to improve my pace. I felt strong enough to put pressure on George Russell’s Mercedes ahead of me, but then the rear lost grip and I wasn’t able to save it.” – he pointed out.
Lewis Hamilton remains encouraged
Even though his race ended in retirement, Lewis Hamilton stressed that he came back from the summer break with renewed motivation: “I’m sad for the team, I really wanted to score those points for them. Mentally I’m fine, I had positive feelings. I felt like I was making progress. I’ve been racing for such a long time and I could count on one hand the number of crashes like this, but apart from that it was a really solid weekend and we made a lot of progress both in the overall approach and in everything else. So leaving empty-handed hurts.” – the Ferrari driver concluded at the end of the Dutch Grand Prix.
