As usual after every Grand Prix, Italian sports journalist and author Leo Turrini was interviewed by calciomercato.com to talk about the recent events in Formula 1 and the Maranello team’s performance in what is turning out to be a disappointing championship. The well-known Ferrari insider pointed out the complicated moment that the Italian side is going through and also made some parallels with the football world. Here are his considerations.
Speaking to the microphones of the well-known portal calciomercato.com when asked about the outcome of the 2022 Dutch Grand Prix, Leo Turrini first of all shared his appreciation for the winner of the race, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen: “He also won at his home in the Netherlands. Among a thousand complications, safety car, pitstops and bla Blah blah. A prophet in his home land. Nothing to object about”.
Then, focusing on Scuderia Ferrari, he continued: “Mattia Binotto’s Ferrari is like Maurizio Arrivabene’s Juventus, to name two friends. I see great unexpressed potential for them. In Maranello, just like in Continassa. Charles Leclerc finished third? Yes, it’s the six hundredth podium in the history of the Maranello team. But we are not there where we should be. The Red Bull of Super Max is unapproachable but now Mercedes has also passed us, just take a look at George Russell’s second place in the Dutch Grand Prix. It is not possible to see a Ferrari, that of Carlos Sainz, enter the pits and discover that a tyre is missing!”.
Finally, when asked if the mechanics’ mess could turn out to be ‘the straw that breaks the camel’s back’, Leo Turrini commented: “I don’t know, but if you’re not the fastest on the track, if your name is Ferrari you have to be the best in the pits. Stop. If not, how can you imagine winning the real challenge?”.
